what equipment/program will i need for good home recording?

i want a high quality recording. what can i use to record this, and edit this onto my computer? which recording program(s) should i download? what external equipment must i purchase?

Depending on your budget (which you did not specify), I chose the Fostex MR-8 digital multitracker ($300) because I didn't have a lot of money to spend. It gives me the capability to save my tracks to pc where I can do whatever I want and then send back to mr-8 for more tracking. A lot of the guys use n-tracks, I use Cubasis. Might want to check out the Fostex forum.
