need help!! da 38 problem.

i have 2 da 38's and they were running great until 2 days ago. out of nowhere both of them(i have them synced togther and im using the rc-808 remote) started snapping and poping and the meters will spike and sometimes i will loose all audio alltogther.
it sounds as if i am using the jog shuttle wheel all the time on playback. the sample rate is 44.1 on both units and the tapes are good cause it will do it with all of my other tapes too. i re-initialized both units and it did nothing. all of the connections on the back are good. i am stumped. how could this happen to 2 seperate machines at the same time? and to top it off the second one was off at the time! it seems as if it has to do with some setting inside of some menu somewhere being wrong.
is there a way to do a hard factory reset?
thanks! -jay

Were those tapes formatted at 44.1? or 48khz?

Also, had the problem once myself (a long time ago) and never figured out what caused it.

The only thing I have done differently is NOT used Sony tape. The one Sony tape I had was the only one that caused the problem. I have run hundreds of hours through those machines without a single problem since then. I know you said it's happening with all your tapes - but if they are all Sony, try something else like Apogee or HHB or Quantegy.
