headphones

i seem to find that there arent enough headphones with wires that are long enough. how do people get around this problem? im using my mixer upstaris in my house and recording the band in my basement. is the only way i can give the band playback by either moving my computer or getting wireless headphones? is there any alternatives?

HogansHiro will become famous soon enough
If you're recording a full band then you probably could use a headphone distribution amp. You will be able to place it in your studio somewhere central to all performers and have multiple headphone outputs each with their individual volume control. It will also boost your signal with in an internal amp because you will lose some as you run the original feed line back into the basement from upstairs. If you want seperate mixes then you're looking at a whole different ball of wax.
Fuhrman makes pretty decent no-frills cheap headphone amp.

long headphone run

Sometimes I run headphones into the other rooms of my house with a couple of 20 - 25 foot headphone extensions from radio shack ($6 ea)
I have a behringer ha4600 that I like a lot, I can run 2 pairs of headphones about 40 feet away from my computer.

to do this you need:
(2) 1/4 inch stereo to 2 out 1/4 inch stereo "Y" adapters
4 20' stereo headphone extension cords.
headphone dist. amp
4 pairs of headphones.
plug the headphone cords into each other and plug the Y adapter into the end where the performers will be, presto 4 sets of headphones, far away from where you are recording.

Yoo Foo:

Yoo can also buy a pair of "wireless" cans which will give you 300 feet of roaming. However, they work best at 125 feet through walls, etc.

I use mine often while doing routine work in the studio. And, I like to use them in the Spring and Summer as I sit outside and listen to my work with a large cold one.
