guitartracks2 can't hear guitarport

Help! I'm trying to use my line6 guitarport as a soundcard / input for guitartracks 2.0 on a windows 2000 laptop. I've made the GP the "prefered audio device". I've followed documentation included at the bottom of this post(which I got from homerecording.com). The symptoms are as follows.
1)I can listen to GuitarTracks through the guitarport.
2)However, I can't record into it. When I go to adjust the levels (by pushing the "Record" button for a given track, selecting guitar Stereo GuitarPort as the input, and then clicking on the input and selecting "Record Control"), I only get one slider, called "Recording Balance". It's set at the maximum, and "Mute all" is not
selected.
Basically, guitartracks 2.0 won't "hear" my guitarport (I can hear myself play guitar, and the various windows sounds, and the
output from guitartracks, through headphones hooked up to the guitarport).
Any help getting through this jam would DEFINITELY be appreaciated.

Here's the documentation I got (to let you know what I already tried). It refers to Cakewalk Pro Audio, not Cakewalk GuitarTracks, but the Options Audio dialog seems the same in both products.

To record using GuitarPort with Cakewalk Pro Audio 9
1. Open Cakewalk
2. Click on the Options menu and select AUDIO.
3. Once the DirectShow Audio dialog box appears, click on the
WAVE PROFILER button.
4. Once the Wave Profiler dialog box appears, click YES to begin the
Wave Profiling process. Click OK when the process is finished.
5. On the track you wish to record on, double click in the space under
SOURCE.
6. In the resulting Track Properties dialog box, select GUITARPORT
(there are options for L, R or Stereo) as both the PORT and
SOURCE.
7. Arm the track for recording. Use the transport controls to record,
stop, rewind and play back as normal.
A COUPLE OF THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND:
** To Cakewalk (and the OS for that matter) GuitarPort is simply
appears as
a soundcard - just like a
SoundBlaster Live or any other soundcard you may have in your computer.
Even
if you are using another
soundcard in addition to GuitarPort, the guitar always needs to be
monitored
through the GuitarPort
hardware when you are recording into a hard disk recording application.
** Selecting GuitarPort as your preferred audio device as described in
the
GuitarPort Help documentation
may simplify issues with signal routing and cabling.

OK, if I removed the connection to the soundcard from the guitarport and rebooted everything it worked.
