Another song for you to lash out on

I've actually had this song lying around for a while, but I've finally committed it to tape. This also marks the first time I've completely composed backing tracks using Fruity Loops (I think it took a total of 10-12 hours. Learning curve included. EEK!!)

This demo sounds a little mechanical, so any comments on how to "loosen" it up would be appreciated.

this sounds better than the other stuff I've heard from you. The mix is pretty mono, except for the occasional cymbal hit off to the side...which is "a little" bizzarre. Sounds a tad like a MIDI guitar, to me also. Much better vocals than in the past. If this was "spread out" more and lushed up a bit...this would go up several notches, sonically. Musically it is very nice, and the singing is fairly good too.

whoa...3:21 comes in with the stereo bg vocals...kinda in a cave..but neato... howcome you dont have this stereo lushness all the way thru...this kinda jumps out a bit, because of aforesaid reasons.

after...5 mins...I'm looking for another section...or the ending....

I have to agree with MIXMKr.This is the best I've heard from you(or from your websites in the past).It has a nice hook and melody.It's just begging for more instrumentation(electric guitar mostly) and some dynamics to give it some highs and lows, instead of the straight line that the song is traveling on in it's present form.

It does need to be a little shorter and a bridge would take it to another level as a song.Maybe put a bridge in and drop a verse(or 2).

The length kinda bothered me as well. Should I cut a verse off? where should I put a bridge? I tend to like my songs to have a beginning a middle and an end, however, I was a little taken aback over how long this song was.

I was wondering how to make the thing sound more "stereo" ish as well. I have a DX effect for stereo wideing, but I'll be damned if I know how to use it. Should I just get two track of everything and pan them left and right?

I'm planning on replacing the "12-string" with a real guitar (I actually began writing this song on mine, so I'll probably put a wave file of me strumming), and perhaps change the 12 string font to one of my electric guitar ones?

I was actually off key in a couple of places with the bg vocals, which accounts for "cave" effects.

How do you suggest I add lushness? I'm a little bugged by the sparseness as well (which is why I have Fairlight sample running through the song; I thought I could fill it up a little with that, but well, obviously, it's not working...)

wow!! i must say, it was real refreshing to hear some female vox around here!! NICE!!!!!!!!!!! i can't help with the song as this is much better than i could do!! yeah, it was a little long, but i got through the whole thing with no problem!! i need to go your mp3 page so i can DL some more of your stuff!! again, i really like your VOICE!!!!!!!

this was good.. sorta reminds me of Joni Mitchell/Edie Brickel (sp)/Tori Amos/Alanis-ish.. all good things.. there are some things that could be better, but I'm not sure how to tell you what they are.. maybe a better overall vocal sound.. I agree with Kramer when he agreed with mixmkr about this being the best thing I've heard from you.. I definitely liked it..

BUT!! I'm slowly finding out that Winamp 3 is very, very... very... not good. It plays back EVERYTHING very, very... very hissy.

DL'ing your .mp3 file from ArtistLaunch right now. Winamp 2.78 should be a lot more fair to your track

Now Sam heard all those artists, but I'm also hearing the Kate Bush "runnin up that hill" thing. You have a nice dynamic. The only crits would be reserved for arrangement; IMO you could do more with the rhythm in the verses (powerful bass drum sound BOOM ... click... BOOM... click... that part)

Something for more dimension? Backing vox (backing up yourself w/some harmonies).

I'm glad to see that this song is getting as good a response as some of those pictures I had been posting.

Anyway...I've been asking for suggestions in other places, and much of what you guys said (lack of stereo, no lushness, sparseness in arrangement, too long, up the bpm or so), is pretty much what others have told me. Fortuantely, it doesn' t look like will take a LOT of work to finish this (tho' I'll probably find something that needs some MAJOR tweaking! )

Pretty sophisticated stuff compared to what I've been doing. Have you experimented with double tracking the solo vocals to thicken them up a bit? I'm thinking of Mixmkr's observations. One think I'm trying to figure out is the bit about retreading solo vocals to make them sit bigger. If you sing each track separately, they aren't identical and those distinctions build lushness. Then a bit of delay, or reverb, or panning, and it's bigger than life.

Well, at least that's what they tell me... Nice work.
