Talking James Brown - I feel good

hey guys, I think there may be too much low end..

it's not finished, but I would like to get an ear on it.. I didnt add too many harmonies because I am also curious about the vocal sound..

rip it apart as if I insulted you first by asking you to listen!

thanks as always, and Merry Christmas!

last tune..

whoa.... a "real" song with recognizable chord changes!! how bizarre!!

I liked it a lot...

are you experimenting with the drum sound?

you ALWAYS have a lot of low end... sounds fine to me.

so...howcome you get the telephone effect... do you sound like that live and in person?
some other guy posted about the effect in your other post...and it was sans...

2:55...sammyville!!!!

I picture a big negro dancing around on stage... and great last note riffing, btw!!

Hahaha!Kick ass man!

This mix actually sounds pretty close to just right.VOcals are sitting in the right spot,The low end problem seems to be associated with the guitars and not the Bass line(bass guitar or keyboard bass?).Roll a little bit of low end off those guitars and see if it opens up a hole for the actual bass line to stick it's head through.

Sounds good to me man.Killer concert ending.

I dig it man.Good job.

Thumbs up

hey mix, yeah man I have been experimenting with different drum sounds.. When it goes into the change @1:25, that's a completely different kit.. much lower.. I don't know why I get the telelphone effect.. these vocals are pretty much piss dry compared to my normal.. I didnt use the Digitech processor.. I went straight from a 58 into a Blue Tube pre, into a Blue Max compressor, and then added some verb and a touch of chorus straight from the recorder.. I resang this today after drinking until 4a.m. last night.. I smoked some weed to give my voice that dry, desperate sound.. Did you notice the synth in the change? I think it was a 'fifths' type patch.. My XV 20-20 doesnt have a screen so I have to guess at what the sounds are.. (or look them up in the book) If your saying it sounds good, I'll believe it.. thanks mix! check out this EBow site.. http://www.ebow.com/test/newtest/index.htm

Kramer - thanks man! yeah that's a synth bass from a Roland XV 20-20.. probably a good idea to roll off some lows.. I barely used any extra e.q. on this.. I only e.q.'d when I was recording it.. I was hoping the humor would come across in this.. glad you dug it Krame!

oh man....sounds just like the original. How did you do that?

I got it... This ought to be in a night club scene in a movie. The detective walks in and chicks are making out with other chicks and the suspect is in a dark corner doin' coke...

This is a great mix! The vocals are mint! Levels are where they should be IMO. That is of course one of the sickest guitar sounds available for less than Dimebag. Actually...I'd say it's as good usually! He's got more grind and you got more grunt. (Guitarspeak )

Yep that was sweet...Nice job!

You should throw in a "TAKE ME TO THE BRIDGE! UH!"

You sing too laidback for such a heavy tune. Of course this is a poppy-heavy thing, but still. Some screaming, please

You didn't want to do a straight-rock, I hear... This changes, and I just love your ideas what you did here. The kick drum is lost somewhere. I can't always hear it properly. Damn, you made that one part sound like a Black Sabbath riff. How the hell did you do that?! I mean... I've heard the song many times and never realised it had a metal riff in it.

That outro jam was nice, glad to hear you doing some speedy stuff too. This was a really great song to cover and you did it pretty damn well. I just wanted to hear you scream a bit, but I'm nitpicking.

Third listen, and the vocals sound better each time...

I hear nothing I'd change, personally. Great tune !
Low end fits this tune perfectly.

SLuiCe's comment about the bar was exactly what I was thinking, but should be heroin not coke... more moody.

Cool

has a real tight low end on these monitors......

James Brown is probably rolling in his grave right now and....wait, he's not dead yet......

anyways, great cover......

the vocals did have that tunnelly sound in parts, but not in others....

Me first!!

No discernable bass line, as usual. You'd be better off throwing that POS Roland bass synth out, it's ruining what are otherwise awesome concepts and recordings.

Oh, Lord! Pandoras box has been fully opened now! This was great! Not at all what I expected, but I should have known ol' James B would get a complete morphing in the hands of the Samster. My first thought is that this is what the Kinks would have sounded like if they just put the band together today. Then, it goes into that slowed down section and gets really into the codeine feel. I agree: this is how to do a cover!

Makes me wanna say:

Hey Sam,
.....Yeah, Im into remakes alot more than covers. This is a remake....... new twist on an old classic..... Damn Cool!

I like the settings on the vocs. They still sound middy though. I have this problem w/ my vocs. When i record vocs on a dynamic, I usually have to make some pretty drastic cuts in the mids to get rid of that pointed honk. I think you can shed the telphone sound by doing the same. (unless thats what youre going for). I know ive said that before....... ....but try a drastic cut between 1.0 and 1.6 and see what happens. Im thinking it will warm up to the point that it feels uncomfortably flat. .....leave it alone and come back later w/ fresh ears.......

I dig the remake alot man. This sits well in my Samicide remake collection. ......right after "Crazy" (which in my opinion, is stellar).

.......Im gonna PM ya..........

A Reel Person - thanks Dave! I was hoping you would hear this.. I really did think of you when I posted it..

SLuiCe - cool visual! it was fun doing this one even though it doesn't sound like it.. I wish I had a video camera going when I was doing the vocal in the second section.. it seemed like I had to be animated in order to get the vocal delivery I wanted.. I am probably going to resing it eventually because I did these vocals with a hangover.. (see your previous thread ) I just cant seem to leave the mic on the stand.. I can only sing when I hold it.. (If you want to call what I do singing) I'll be checkin' out your remix as soon as I'm done with these replies.. In other words, at least an hour from the time I typed this word.. (sounds of water bubbling in the background..... then a blood curdling cough)

Cranky One - you are always dead on.. like a few other people here, I always look forward to hearing your comments.. I should have sang this with more balls.. I was hungover when I did this vocal.. (I know you saw Sluices other thread! ) No excuse for a soft delivery though!! I am glad that you stay picky because that is how this place should be, and that's how I try to be.. (even though I sometimes get too soft) your right about the kick drum getting a bit lost.. there may be a little too much in the low end area also.. As far as how I came up with this, I just grabbed my drop C# guitar and put the song on.. After I got the basic idea, I began to warp it.. The original version is great, so I'm glad nobody thought I was trying to make fun of it. Although I tend to be very sarcastic sometimes.. It's all 'tongue and cheek' as they say.. sometimes more tongue, sometimes more cheek..

teknomike - thanks for the comments man!

Gidge - LMAO!! your a funny dude... sometimes!
I'm working on the vocal sound man.. thanks for the monitor check/ears!

dudes, I'll finish this in a little while.. don't you just hate it when people stop by without calling?!! Maybe it's someone with some Christmas food or some type of cookies!

be back later on.. thanks!!!!

Pinky -"it's ruining what are otherwise awesome concepts and recordings" I appreciate you checking out all my garbage lately, and I'm glad your critical.. I look forward to your next song! I have been getting lazy lately, but I will definitely be bringing out the 5 string bass for the next one.. (or the one after that) thanks!

muzeman hey Pete, glad no one thought I was making fun of this song because the original is great.. it's cool that you can see the humor in it.. I know my songs sometimes sound scary, but most of it is all in good fun.. (even the horror movie stuff) I'm really trying to get my vocal problems handled.. thanks for the comments about that, and addressing my low end concerns.. My Event 20/20's are misleading sometimes.. they really make things seem very bright, when in fact, it's a mud pie! later bud!

Guernica - first, erase every version of 'crazy' that you have!! The vocals on that song make me want to play keyboards.. I am going to try that cut between 1.0 and 1.6.. maybe that's what it needs.. Do you think holding the mic makes a major difference? I find that I cant get into it unless I'm holding the mic.. I'll admit sometimes I move around too much, but I try to keep my feet planted.. Shit!!! I just realized you sent a p.m. and I didnt read it yet... sorry man, I'm burnt.. I'm on it right after this.. actually I'll finsh this reply in a p.m.

crawdad - hey crawdude, it's funny you bring up the Kinks because someone here made mention of Van Halen redoing 'you really got me.' When I decided to do this, I grabbed my guitar and just started jamming to the original.. the original is such a great song, and my friends got a kick out of hearing me sing these lyrics.. I thought of you and LT. Bob on this one.. I even considered doing a version with Lt. Bob's sax, but I got carried away with the 'codeine' vibe.. I love the opening line to your post, "Oh Lord!" that is a great response to me!! thanks!

Everyone - Have a great Christmas! Here's to another year of musical contraptions!

maybe this year I'll get the drums and vocal level right....

then again..

maybe you will too!!!!!!

sam - (drum nazi, hypocrite, marijuana advocate)

Listening to this, I'm trying to imagine sam jumping down into a split w/a lit joint in one hand, and a mic in the other. Goooood remake... lots of grind... got the smiley EQ thing going still... a to hell with it. The dang thing sounds great; the arrangement works great, your Ebowing is awesome... & IMO your vocals aren't bad at all. They don't sound timid--maybe bored--but not timid. Doesn't sound like you're mocking the godfather of soul at all. Has MrQ got to hear this yet?

Which "mic" are you holding while singing? That could make a major difference

Well Michael Jackson can't sing w/out grabbing his "mic", either. Welcome to the big-time, Sam!

Sam.............this is freakin' GREAT!
As a sax player....I've grown to hate this song 'cause when I sit in with bands that aren't used to having sax....they always want to do this song and my 'sitting in" consists of that dah-dah-dah-dah-dah-dah-dah! Part. Whoopeee!
So I was expecteing the same old lame arrangement. hey; it's great if you're James Brown but for everyone else....it's lame.
But then this kicked off and I'm blown away. I'm gonna bring this to my daughter band and get her to sing the lead. And everytime we do it....we're gonna announe that it's Black Sabbath's version. We won't be lying.

Great job Sam.......merry Christmas to you.

Uh...it's original.

I guess my problem with this is that the lyrics are very lightweight, and the music is very heavy. I feel like I'm in that Bog in "The Two Towers" rather than boppin' to a James Brown remake.

I like the guitar effects on this. And the solo is really rockin'.

The atmospheric break toward end really works for me.

If I can forget the James Brown original, I'll enjoy this.
