Hello. I posted a couple of these a while back, but I'm always interested to hear what others think. These are some bedroom recordings, done one instrument at a time to a click, into Cubase. I've recently switched to analog tape and a large room where I can make noise and track live with bandmates. The digital aspect and the perfect click timing make them a bit sterile, but it's a shame to leave them collecting dust. My buddy wrote/sung the songs and I played the instruments.

Thanks,
Max

the three I heard, "revolution," "baby obey," and "apocalypse..."

They all give me a strong Davies' bros feel. Kink-y, perhaps??? Lots of vintage type sounds (tremolo and the like) and distant drums make it sound very retro to my ears.

Good guitar hooks, clever weird lyrics, vox are off key in places but the interesting voice is more important than perfect execution in this type of song. Vocally, reminds me of a bit of Frank Black on the second tune but without the occasional screaming. I like the laid back style tho too.

As far as mix, I felt the drums sounded a little distant, like I said. Like a jazz drummer playing in a stairwell. That may be what your after so I'm not saying what to do with it.

and they seemed quiet to me compared to pro mp3s. Were these mastered?

I dig the direction tho. I'm sure you're very proud.

This is very cool stuff. I've downloaded them all.

I'll be playing this for my friend the Kinks fan and also the Flaming Lips fan.

Good work!

Wow. thanks for all the positive feedback.

Yup, Kinks are a big influence, as is Frank Black.

Yeah, the drums are a bit distant sounding. That is partly the sixties influence, but also I only had two decent channels of mic pres (Presonus MP20), so I used that for the overheads and was forced to run the kick and snare through a - cough - Tascam portastudio. Maybe I mixed them low.

Decent writing. Good lyrics.

The production totally fits the song. Nice openess, nice sense of space. The vocals are a bit forward but you adjust after 10 seconds. Nothing is really intruding on anything else. Vocals are clear and well sung. Drums work as they are. Dont bring them closer in...it would kill the vibe.
There are alot of bands trying to be lo fi right now who just come off sounding amateur and stupid bec they dont know enough about what lo fi really is and how to get that sound in 2002/3. Revolution nicely demonstrates that hard to find balance between retro lo fi and modern production.
If you guys pushed the envelope on original writing a bit more I would think you would be a serious contender for a national audience right now.

Thumbs up nice!

Just heard 'Revolution' so far.

Fantastic song, love the retro style. Awesome voice, has an 'effortless' power and clarity which just sounds SO great.

Lyrically... for the most part catchy and interesting, butl I presonally abhore any trace of nationalism/jingoism/politics in art, maybe a touch of that here... but otherwise superb!

Thanks
Klytus
