What mics do you guys use? Stereo? I have one AT4033, probably should get another.

Mic placement? EQ & Dynamics?

Should the player use headphones or just play without?

Secrets?

just thinking that one mic should cut it - elimates phase problems. I can also get a stereo image at mixdown.

what would be a could pair of mics to use for stereo recordings on instruments. An accoustic guitar would be good, but also other instruments as well.

Either a pair of Behringer ECM8000 ($80pair) Don't let the price fool you these are great mics, just do a search on this BBS to see others reviews. These give you a true sound and dont colour the sound.

Or a pair of Marshall MXL 603s ($140pair) which are a bit more but produce a warmer sound due to the larger capsule than the behringers.

What about using a large diaphram condensor. Like an apex 410 or whatver, i don't know what other ones are like it, looks like a neuman u87 but obviously isn't, just one of those large diaphram condensors.

If i bought 2 of them woudl they work? or do you need the pencil style so you can do the x/y configuration, what ive done with my stereo recordings so far, simply because i had nothing else to use, is i used an apex 410, and a shure sm58
close miced with the 58, put the apex a little further away, and panned each one 100 percent to opposite sides. Sounded pretty good i guess, i don't know a lot about phase issues but it sounded fine i think.
But actually yea thats a good point about the 2 single ones for a proper xy configureation, i didin't know how those were setup until recently.

So what would you use a large diaphram for? Mono micing instruments, and vocals?

Yeh large diaphram condensers are great for a warm natural clear sound. That's why they are good for for a room mic or great for vocals and drum overheads.

I would continue using the setup you are using as it is fine. The SM58 dynamic will pick up the main in your face sound of the guitar with the condenser picking up the natural body sound with a some room sound as it is further back. Mix to taste.

hmm, good point. Assuming i use a stereo pair, like you listed above, they would have no phase problems, if done properly in an xy format. BUT, if i added a large diaphram condensor into the mix, behind them in the room for that room sound, would i have phase problems? I supose its possible, and if i did, phase reversal? OUCH no phase reversal on mackie boards is there? Thats assuming im using a mackie board for preamps.

What do i do? Hmm.

So are you thinking about getting two small condensers?

If you did you do the x/y technique or you could do this technique which also sounds nice.

I put one ecm8000 about 12 inches off the 12th fret pointing at the 12th fret and a second ecm8000 over the right shoulder pointing pretty much directly at the sound hole.

got a pair of new ECM 8000's, recorded 6 tunes with the 10th fret and right over-the-shoulder mic positions and the results were........

pretty darn good. i'll try to post a sample soon. the 8000's lived up to their billing.

great sound for under $100 pair of mics! i used a yamaha aw4416 digital workstation and nothing else!

client is happy, i'm happy......

i use an audio technica MB4000C 6" off the 12th fret, and an audio technica 4033 on the bridge.

or

an AT MB4000C off the 12th fret, another 4000C off the bridge and the 4033 as a room mic. i've only used this successfully on 1 song because i don't really like the sound of my room.
