Studio projects TB1

i have a friend that's gonna get TB1 tomorrow afternoon... he asked me if he'd need a good preamp for it, or to just run it into his mackie 32.8..... i told him i'd ask you guys
seeing that i've never delt with a TB1

if he gets a pre with it he has a budget of $250

Personally, I'd suggest that he buy the mic only at this time and see how he likes what he hears through his Mackie pre's. If he decides he wants more "clarity" or a different tonal "color", he'll at least know what he's comparing it to. If this is his first good LD condenser, he's gonna be blown away with the way it sounds, (almost) no matter what preamp he uses.

Chances are that he'll need to pay more than $250 to get a better preamp that he's already got anyway...

what about the studio projects pre.. he can get one for 150..
its not his first condencer.. but he's building a home studio.. he usually works with akg solid tubes, but he doesn't have the money for one..
so he's getting he tb1 after hearing it and reading some reviews... i think he has a outboard compressor for the mic already..

the studo projects vs the mackies.. would you spend the extra 150...or save for a better pre witha decent compressor built on.. like a highend joe meek, TL audio, or maybe the Maudio Tampa..

i plan on getting the tampa in the next few months...

Well, if it was me, I'd still only buy the TB1 first, and check out the results with the existing Mackie pre's.

Each preamp has a different tonal character (very accurate, or "warm", or "grainy") as well as a different input headroom specification (+11db, +18db, +22db, etc.).

If your friend doesn't have any other mic pre's, then the SP pre for $150 might be a good place to start, in that it will give him a "clean" sound, as well as different levels of "warm" sounds...

TB1

I have a 32*8 and a pair of TB1's.. I'd say get one. They're fun to play with, as you can use it in solid-state mode, or you can selectively add portions of the signal through the tube part of it.

the vocal on this sample I have is a Neumann TLM103 through a TB-1, with a hair of the tube-blend. The guitars are MC012's through a Mackie 1402 VLZ. I didn't use the 32*8 because I wanted to sit in the same room <seperate tracking/control rooms and no window> with the performer when we were recording.

I wouldn't get a TB1 for Rap and R&B. I'd get a C1 and a B1 instead.
