What ceiling height are you working with Kevin?

Just about 8 feet in most places. Under the heat ducts is about 6'8" though. I will cover most all of it with rigid fiberglass.

Hello Kevin,

Did you sealed the ceiling first for isolation and then are you going to put the rigid fiberglass under it with panels, or are you basically sealing the existing support beams as panels and putting the rigid fiberglass in the panels?? Are you using one of John Sayers’s ceiling examples on the SAE page? I am going to start building my studio very soon in my basement, which is very similar to yours and I am kind of confused how to go about the ceiling. I am not sure what would be best for my basement height which is 7.6 feet from floor to support beam and the support beam is aprox 7 inches. By the way I live in Lawrence MA, and work only a few minutes from you in Boxboro.

Luis - I made the ceiling as shown in the drawing below. I did seal it everywhere with acoustical sealant though there are a couple of openings around light fixtures where I still need to seal. So far so good... even though the door is not on yet, it really cuts down noise to & from the upstairs.

Boxboro huh? You must drive by on 495. We are near the Tyngsborough line. If you want to stop by some time let me know - I'd be glad to show you what we have done.

hey kevin - that celotex - which version did you use 600 or 800 and what thickness. The figures I read on it indicate that it's as good as rigid fibreglass in it's absorption curve.

Hi John - I'm not sure what version it is. It is 3/4" thick and is labeled "SOUND STOP".

Hey John, remember me? I seriously need to get back to building my studio again. For the last year I've been getting a band together and things just aren't moving anywhere due to a lack of good drummers in my area.

It's good to see that "our" site is getting so many cool studios on it. It has a few more hits than the last time I checked it about a year ago.

Hi Luis - I belive John got those figures from this site:

They are a different company from the one that makes the Celotex stuff I have on my ceiling (and is available from Home Depot.)

By the way...which home depot did you get the RC1- I've tried in New hampshire and methuen HDepot and they don't have them.

I got it in Nashua. It is in the drywall section right next to the tools and metal studs. There is another place I found that can source both the RC and 703 (rockwool too) called "Dana Wallboard" they are in Tyngsboro (off Rt113, two exits up Rt3 from me).

Hi Kevin,

I can't remember how thick was the rockwool you used in your studio (3" or 4" ). I called a few places and they only carry mineral wool 4" thick and they couldn't tell me the sound absortion values. I don't want to get the wrong stuff.

I also got a quote on 3lb knauf 2" 2'x4' at $6.40 each. Do you or anyone know if that is a good price and also if that is the right stuff to use in the wall cavities.

The sound absortion values are:

knauf 3.0 Pcf Plain 2"
