benifits on recording with plugins

I just got baned from DUC, not sure why? maybe cause i posted saying my 4-track recording sounded much brigther then digi001. GRRR

Ok i have the digi001 and I notice people saying they record with plug-ins already attached to the track. What benifit is to do this? then to just add it later. When you use plug-ins you have to set the buffer to 128 in order to get good latency vs useing low lantency montiering.

Why would people add plugin to the track to record?

Wink

...I think most of them use plugins on tracks, because they don't have an outboard gear to do the propher tracking. Some track recorded with compressor/Eq inserted in the first place, while they don't have a decent compressor/Eq, they tend to use plugins. But I wouldn't do that. You don't want to deal with latency do you ?

There is no point in recording with plugins active that I am aware of. Any dynamic processing will take place after the ADC and any effects will have latency.

Got banned from DUC? Digi is pretty old school as far as marketing goes. They've got a thirty foot wall built between their customers and their company. Besides, I'm sure 50 DUC users would have come to their defense if they allowed your post to stay.

I don't know why people use plug ins when tracking. But I found something interesting on my 001 - I get much better performance at the 128 buffer size than the 1024 (or whatever the highest is) even during playback. On one song my computer crapped out after just a couple seconds of playback at 1024. But I was able to bounce the entire song to disc at 128. I know I'm not the only one to experience this. Give it a try.

i have not done a ton of this, but I think it could make sense on effects that impact performance. Things like multitap delay, where your playing is directly impacted, especially rhythmically.

i agree with adam.

i have a TDM system, so latency isn't as much of an issue. But I will definitely set up an aux fader with a reverb on it while tracking, so if anyone needs to get wet, i can oblige them.

if you have a plug-in like amp farm, for instance, if you are going to use it, chances are you will want to have it instantiated during tracking, since altering the guitar sound will certainly affect the way the guitarist plays.

the same could be true for any type of plug-in - if it is making any significant contribution to the sound of the instrument, the player may want to hear it right from the start.
