Unhappy RNP order

Mercenary shipped (or said they shipped) my RNP on the morning of the 6th, Priority Mail. Not here yet

How long does it take to get an order from them... those of you who live in the West? (Cali, Nevada, Washington, Ore, Ariz, Colo, Utah, etc.)

Priority Mail should be 2-3 days... but it could just be this time of year Hope they didn't ship to the wrong address.

Lightbulb

I thought Mercenary only shipped UPS/signature required. Everything I ordered from them was sent this way. THey even sent me the tracking number. I'm in PA, so their stuff didn't take too long to arrive. Ask them if they sent the package with any tracking. To cover their b*tts, they really should have some sort of tracking on it. Good luck!

Post ofiice? Ha! yeah, you can rush all you want, you'll still find a yellow slip on your door saying you have to go pick it up before 4:30 at some post office you didn't even know existed

Thumbs up

Well... it's here!

I'd forgotten they send their stuff in an envelope... Wow! This box is tiny... it's smaller than the VTB-1... and that's with 2 channels... could almost fit it in my back pocket.

Now... for another afternoon of procrastination instead of recording; sitting here on the bbs staring at the new gear

you do that too.

i spend so much time looking at the shiny packaging and then openning up my self-bought present and staring at its newness and thinking of all the great things i'll do with it.

instead of actually doing something with it.

then the next morning, i'll wake up at the crack of dawn and spend all day playing with the new thing.

i can't wait until my RNP arrives (bought it from humbucker last week). then i'll see if it really is better than my 1604vlz pro... but not until the next morning.

I would like to hear what differences you will be finding between mackie pres and the rnp.

Wink My Experiance (for what it is worth)

I've had my RNP for about 3 weeks now and I'll try to describe the difference between it and my Mackie 1604 vlz pro board. (Which is all I have been using for 3 years)

First off on either system I don't use EQ (and very little compression) when tracking so I try to work alot with placement. That being said I basically use only the pre amp section of the Mackie and go straight out the direct outs.

My impressions thus far:

On vocal mikes:
(AT 4033-Cad E100-SM 57). The biggest difference I can describe is The mackie has some bottom and some fairly clear highs, but the mid-range ares were always flat and muddy. With the RNP the mics all became a lot more robust, the mid range became full but transparent so the mics sounded more consistant from top to bottom of audio range . You can get more usable gain before noise with the RNP also. My Mackie would start clipping its output amps when pushing the faders up near the top even though the meters said otherwise, so if you add more input gain and lower the fader you get a little more hiss than for the equivelant output of the RNP.

On Keyboard:
Wow! the sounds were soooo much fuller / thicker.
I tried using the RNP for some touch-up overdubs on an existing piano-string track and couldn't use it. It sounded so incredibly different from the original it was like 2 different keyboards. I had to go back to the Mackie.

On Drums:
Again robust comes to mind . Better imaging more beef through mid range. My mikes sounded totally different . The drums had more color, the mics did not seem as harsh-trebely (is that a word?) I recorded some percussion tracks from a distance and they sounded very natural and deep rather than 1 dimensional.

Don't get me wrong with care the Mackie can get perfectly usable sounds, but the RNP is definitely a step up. It is very subtle in some regards where you may not notice till you are mixing 8-20 tracks and you realize it isn't all muddy, in other cases such as my keyboard experiance it is very dramatic.

I hope this helps some I find it hard to paint word pictures some times. It is also very early in the morning and when I read this later it will probably look like crap. Anyway let me know if you have any specific questions.

Tom

OK since we're now comparing the RNP to other pre's, I'll chime in.

The only other pre I own (besides PA stuff) is the DMP2 pres in the Omni Studio. I have A/Bed the DMP2 to the RNP and at first it was obvious that I liked the RNP better but it didn't floor me. Just noticeably better. So I began to break it down as what I liked better. Tighter low end, better mids (similar to the Mackie comparison above), and a much smoother top end with more air than harshness which is a complaint I've always had about the DMP2. Overall, the sound is MUCH more refined. The more I flipped back and forth the more I liked the RNP. After cutting more than a few tracks with it, it now does floor me how much better it is. I seriously don't think I could bring myself to cut an important track with the DMP2 now that I have the RNP. The DMP2 has this annoying peak in the upper mids (low highs, I don't know) that just makes me cringe now that I have another option. Maybe it will be useful for something but I'm not sure what just yet.

I even played the tracks for my wife. She commented on the first run through how much better the RNP sounded without any prompting. She described it as the vocals (it was a vocal track) seemed to be more a part of the music instead of vocals on top of music.

Just my experiences.

I think Wayne has a VTB. Maybe we can get together and do some comparisons.

tom and jason:

Thanks for the helpful inputs. I am sure alot of us were interested in hearing the comparisions. Alot of us own RNC with some ok pres like Mackie, and are looking for a step-up. Thats' why RNP looks so appealing right now. But, how does it stack up against other pres in its price range or above??
In the $500 range, there is Grace, with a hundred or 2 more, there is Peavy, and with a little more $$, there is Avalon and a whole new world...i am mumbling now...

Geezus guys, this isnt even a debate anymore. The RNP is the most versatile preamp for under $1000 a channel, and its only $240 a channel. Period. Quit wondering if the DMP2 is better or the so and so piece of shit ART whatever is better... for Gods sake, the RNP easily outranks anything I've heard in the budget price range on almost everything you can think of in terms of clarity and sonics. Period. The Grace is more for 1 channel than the RNP is for 2. You do the math. If you are in the market for cheap preamps, its the only one. Why even ask about the others and burn an age old topic further into the ground?
There is a new kid in town, and he has taken all the chicks away. You can hang with him, or you can hang with the losers. Your choice. End the debate.

I didn't realize the RNP had been out for ages....

But regardless of that, I'd still love to hear if someone likes the RNP over the VTB-1 and why. Thanks for the thread, Chad.

i will buy a piece of gear on the face of its marketing. i have done it before and i'll do it again.

i will not KEEP a piece of gear unless it works as marketed.

i will do an A/B test of the RNP against my mackie when i get it. and then a week later, i'll re-review my test. if the RNP isn't up to snuff, i'll send it back. if i can't send it back, then look for my RNP on ebay.

i chose the RNP over the Grace101 because the RNP is dual channel. if i don't hear a clear upgrade between the RNP and mackie, I'll go buy two Grace 101s.

smartass

But regardless of that, I'd still love to hear if someone likes the RNP over the VTB-1 and why. Thanks for the thread, Chad.

Yeah... this has turned into quite a thread, eh? Uh... I had a couple of test files up yesterday; Tom & a couple others heard them, but I shitcanned them... because they just sucked

Only had about an hour and a half to record two versions (one with RNP, the other with DMP3) and most of that time was mic setup, placement, level checking... the takes sucked... it was a rush job... the electric guitar tone didn't mesh with the acoustic. Sounded like a 1st year guitar student playing on 'em

So... I'll put up some good quality comparison files... the DMP3, RNP, and yes the VTB-1 (using both the solid state & tube blend feature) and this should be done by tonight... and hopefully I won't sound like "Johnny-Just-Picked-Up-A-Guitar-For-The-Very-First-Time" anymore

Actually, the RNP isn't really as "quiet" as I expected (on first tries), but then again I used 40db of gain. The imaging was superior to the DMP3, however, but we'll hopefully get a better idea with these files tonight.

Although I have no doubt that RNP is a good bang for the buck as we all know about RNC, my question wasn't answered....

The RNP is the most versatile preamp for under $1000 a channel
The Grace is more for 1 channel

I don't see how these 2 statements support the same point....

no offence, tube, but I was just looking for some comparison since I live in the middle of nowhere and have no chance to test anything against anything.
Take care

that's true A1A2,

i went to visit my wife for a week while she was doing some work for the navy. i couldn't figure out for the life of me what the navy was doing in land locked bloomington, indiana.

anyway, i only found one good musical instrument store when i was near the university, but i was pleasantly surprised by the number of local bands doing shows around the area.

i knew i was in for a different experience when i drove past the larry bird car dealership which was surrounded by corn in every direction.

Yeah, bloomington is a musical town with university's well known music program. The thing is that the biggest instrument shop we have here carrys 2 mixers, 1 fake sm57(which costs more than the real 57), and maybe 3 synthesizers....
Maybe the navy was here to practise by the lake, i dunno....
