I've heard almost all positive comments--even raves--about the Envoice. I chose the Meek VC1Q, though, and haven't been sorry.

mindprint review # 47

Do a search on the envoice and voicemaster. Ive written a bunch of posts about it and I think its a great unit at any price. Ive had an envoice for a year or so and have had pricier pres here at various points. Its still one of the first units I reach for on vocals and acoustic. The pre is full bodied and has a very open, non hyped top end. The EQ is good but I rarely track with EQ. Ignore the tube or use it sparingly. The compression is the main part of the unit and its very, very good. Its soft knee, very smooth and flattering on vocals. If youre a fan of comping on the way in and during mixing, this compressor will serve you well. Compressing twice, soft knee, will get you a much smoother sound than once more aggressively. Ive used the RNC at various points in super nice mode and have not gotten the creamy smooth sound that I have with the envoice (though it sounds nice in a dif way). You cant set the attack or release on the compressor (there are 2 settings for it --fast or slow) the settings are program dependant and respond to your input. One of the key factors in why the compressor sounds the way it does is the filter which allows spikes under 300Hz to pass through without triggering the compressor which prevents pumping.
The VC1Q is very nice too but a totally different animal. Its much more aggressive, has more bottom and the pre on its own is not as detailed as the envoice pre. Its great on guitars and at times vocals. Not as universal or subtle as the mindprint.

I know a couple of people (1 review and a mate) who have bought Focusrite platinum kit and have had noisy (hissy) preamps - I think they vary a bit.

Thumbs up

I've had the Envoice for a couple of years now.

It's an awesome preamp for the reasons mentioned above and also for it's ability to go from totally transparent to really, really warm and smooth.

Get the Envoice, you won't regret it.

CJ, I know you love the Meek VC1Q, but the new TL Audio VP5051 Ivory 2 is anything but horrible!
Take a listen at Dot's sessions at www.thelisteningsessions.com
I dunno 'bout you, but I think that SM57 guitar track (session 2) sounds pretty friggin' great through the TL Audio Ivory 2.

For me, it'll be a toss up between that TL Audio, the MindPrint and the Joemeek VC1Qcs. The Joemeek is losing it, because
a) the 'cs' version doesn't use transformer balanced I/O
b)I'm gonna buy a seperate Joemeek compressor anyway, and that's where Joemeek gets its signature sound from, eh?

and about the MindPrint En-VOice....I'm probably gonna buy the DTC in the future, so having the En-Voice would be more of the same, only lower quality probably...
So I'm pretty much lusting for that new TL Audio VP5051 Ivory 2...
