Myabe this is an oft asked question...

If it is, I apologise. I searched for it but I couldn't find this question, or any answers.

Does anyone know of any good free software for PC that ISN'T a demo or trial version for recording audio?
I would like to be able to plug my guitar into my computer and record the sound wth something other than Windows Sound Recorder or similar.

I'm pretty low on funds recently, and I just bought Reason which has cleaned me out. I downloaded Internet Tape Deck on a trial version, so something like that would be ideal.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Lee

The first link is not free. Good program for the money.
The second link you will have to look.
Look in Ebay Auction/Proaudio. You might find a good deal there.

Isn't there a pro tools free version? I'm not so sure of capabilities/compatibilities but I do know I couldn't get it to run on Win2k.

Thanks Sarah and everyone else.

I'm just downloading Quartz's free version. It looks like the kind of thing I am after.

I'll have to investigate that free version of Pro Tools. That would be fantastic if there is.

But thanks again everyone.

Thanks Duck. I'm just downloading Pro Tools free version now. This should be really cool. I've heard nothing but good things about this.
A friend of mine in Thailand actually works for Pro Tools translating their manual to Thai. He is always raving about it.

Cheers. The help has been much appreciated. I can now get on with recording some material.

If I remember correctly PTF will not run on Win2000. It does somewhat OK on Win98, but I found it a difficult program to learn to use to its full potential. Not to mention the lock-ups and crashes it caused. My computer is plenty adequate for using the free version, but PTF is kind of buggy.

There is a free demo of CoolEdit 2000 that is available. Problem with that one is that you CANNOT save your work. I found that out the hard way yesterday. It is an easy program to use with many options available for paying customers. All I needed was a way to get my stuff to NWR.com.

Remember, once you close the program your work is gone.

I'm finding that out now that PTF is a slightly crazy application. It's certainly complicated. I'm having to run thought the e-manual a lot just to figure out how to use it.
But it crashes an awful lot. Like Sennheiser, my computer is well within what you'd expect to be normal parameters to run this software, but still it crashes a lot.

I'll persevere with it only because it's PT we're talking about, and from what I know about it, it's supposed to be the proverbial dog's.....erm..bits.
If this was any other app, I think I'd probably ditch it and move onto something else.

If im not mistaken Pro Tools was originally made for the Mac. Ive seen posts where there is problems with it on a Pc Platform. I would ditch it and try out the quartz. Then save your money for some kind of cakewalk, cool edit etc. Why waste good recording time trying to fix something that is a demo.

I thought the same thing about avoiding PC/digi001 combos but a Charger, a former digidesign employee, says not so... He explained it well but I can't seem to find that thread. Search for his name and pro tools and you should find it.
