Roland JV-1010

Sup HR, I'm new to the forum. Newbie, here to learn.

I'm asking for this module for Christmas. It'll be my first synth that Ive ever received, and I'm fresh to music production. I'm not into the vocals yet, but more along the lines of instrumentals. Im after the hip hop, r&b and some jazz sound. Ive heard all of the Roland demos, I like what I heard. Ive checked around, listened to a few MP3 artists that use the 1010 and Im impressed. Since I'm new I like the idea of the built in session card, and Id still be able to go and pickup other cards in the future when Im ready for that. Here is what Im running right now, PC wise.

I know I dont have a good soundcard, but hopefully I can get a decent paying job oppurtunity soon so I can buy one. I dont have any monitors either, I dont think Ill need them just yet. Until then I think Ill pickup some Altec Lansing speakers, and just use those or hookup a stereo speaker setup to the computer. Anyways, all I need to know is if the Jv1010 will meet my needs. Im 15, and Ive done a fair bit of research on the 1010. I think I will go with it, but I dont wanna jump into something Ill regret. So Im here to get a few comments from the higher educated. I hv a JV1010 myself, good stuff... can;t really go wrong with that...
I read in another post you're considering the XV2020 as well.... I understand that should be a newer upgrade to the JV1010... since you're not paying for it.... I suggest you get the XV2020, it should be everything the JV1010 is and better.

The 1010 has some cool sounds, but you can only edit patches with the librarian on a computer. You can tweak things in real time and save patches.

The 1010 is kinda getting to the end of it's run I would think. It's been out about three years and that's about shelf life of this stuff.

What up Balance. I use a JV1010... I also do hiphop and R&B tracks. Currently working on a R&B album with the 1010 being the main sound source. It's a nice sound module but kinda weak as a main sound module. And weak as hell when it comes to drums. Sounds are supposed tothinner than the more expensive sound modules (understandable with the $$ tag). I've haven't had the chance to deal with the beefer Roland modules long enough to decide for myself (2080 and a XP80 for a few days...nice!!!). If you can, go for something a little more beefed up... especially if your planning on just using that one sound source. Roland has some dope sounds though. Hell I was looking for a second JV1010...

The JV1010 is a decent low cost module, but it does have very limited on board programming ability (the editor software does provide better editing ability).

The JV1010 is out of production. The XV2020 is designed to be the "tabletop" model to replace the JV1010 (subject to the same editing limitations of the JV1010), but the 2020 actually has a sound engine more in line withe the XV5050 (rack mount unit).

Altough I'm sure there are still JV1010's avaiable the XV2020 would certainly be a step up - and I don't think the XV2020 is priced too much higher than the JV1010 has been.

Mike, nope I think the 2020 is about $200 more. But I think that I would be able to push it up to that price, at least I'm hoping.

Is the XV engine the same soundbank as the JV? I'm thinking that the sounds are fatter, warmer & a bit better than the 1010 since Lazi said that the sounds are a bit thin. But I might be able to go to the music store myself, which is out of town to. So I can get a little bit of playtime with both of the modules. Would I have all of the same sounds on the 1010 on the 2020? Unless, would it be a whole new soundbank?

I have not actually heard the XV2020 - but I do have the XV5050 which is the same sound engine.

The XV sound engine is more advanced then the JV. However, some of the sounds in the XV engine don't sound that much better (perhaps even the same) as the JV series. And some sounds are better.

It is my understanding the 2020 does have processing which I beleive the JX1010 did not. It also have room for 2 expansion cards (the JV1010 only accepted one card).

In any case, there are plenty of great sounds in the XV engine and a 2020 will give you more than enough to record what ever you plan for.
