Question hiphop/rap - i want my mix really warm and really lowendy

alright, so i got my mixes...but they dont sound bassy ENOUGH.......i guess..?

haha

i dont REALLY know how to describe it, but i want more lows and low-mids, and yet still have crisp vox during the rapping - and then again during some chorus' the group of voices to be really low.

i'm sure everyone can understand what i'm talking about when i say i want it to sound like most hiphop out there. talib kwali - relfection eternal is a good example, i love hi-techs beats that is what does it i think. ha.

but also things like nappy roots - i love their sound too.

any suggestions? am i REALLY safe to just BOOST the frequencies in the instruments that i want??

KingstonRock is on a distinguished road
One good way to get bass is multiband compression, or a frequency specific compressor. Just eqing can make the whole mix sound muddy and/or boomy.

Than there are plugins like the waves maxxbass bassmaximizer, I'm not really sure how that works, but its really easy to use, and over-use stuff like that.

It really depends where and by how much your stuff is lacking maybe you can get away with just a small eq boost on the kick and/or the bass.

ok... the entire FOUNDATION of the tunes it sounds like you want is the KICK DRUM. You get that right.. everything falls into place.

What kind of kick are you using? Is it sampled or live? Do you just have the 2track? or do you still have the opp to remix?..

have you ever used DRUMAGOG?

get the kick right...

we just use samples.

most the stuff is samples from other songs/cd's/etc. some off vynal beat discs, etc.

can anyone link me to some DX multiband compressors? (especially the free ones)?

thanks a ton...

by the way, how do those multiband's work? just compress the bass shit, and boost it?

make multiband compression that last of your concerns.

start with a thumping kick sample and a bass sound that complements the kick.

to get the bass to feel right, allow some high end to the bass. i mean don't be so worried about getting low end that you forget to give the bass a little sizzy .... i mean a little.

then when you mix the track, make sure that you put that kick and bass out there for the world to hear, but not above the vocals.

what i mean is that in other forms of music (pop, rock, etc...) the kick and bass aren't as high a priority.

I've been using Mos Def and DeLa Soul (Art Official Intelligence) as reference CD's because the mix is hip-hop balanced and has a quality that extends beyond fast trends.

i think i am defintely getting closer, but now how do i add the final "gloss" to it? to make it sound, still, crisp and "masteredish" haha.
