Getting n-Track Help...

This forum is a nice little group in which to discuss n-Track. It's not as busy or annoying as some other places, and it's pretty newbie friendly. Plus, most of us are very honest about our dealings with n-Track - we understand the good and the bad.

However, I have a little bit of advice if you've got a problem and want to wrap it up as quickly as possible:

1) First, realize that it's called n-Track, and not n-Tracks or ntracks. That way people won't have to start every dicussion telling you the correct name of the software, and you won't in turn react by sarcastically telling them to "excuuuuuse me!" Think of it as a time-saver

2) Determine whether your problem is really an n-Track problem. Lots of people come to this group with questions like, "I can't record anything!", which may or may not be n-Track's fault. If you're not sure where the problem is, try posting it in the Computer Recording and Soundcards forum (just a few forums down from here!). Use the n-Track forum only for n-Track questions!

3) If you're just not getting the help you want here, and you really need an answer, try posting your question on the discussion board at http://www.fasoft.com (where you downloaded n-Track, duh). You'll hit a larger n-Track audience, which may or may not be beneficial. Some people might think it a little odd that I'd send people off to another site, and others may think it silly to have more than one site about n-Track. Personally, I think it's all about atmosphere. If this is where you're most comfortable posting, then by all means post here first....but if your answers aren't here, don't be afraid to seek them elsewhere...just remember to come back. Homerecording.com is a LOT more than just an n-Track forum!

4) Ask the man himself! n-Track is developed Flavio Antonioli, and he's a really great guy. Fill out a support form over at the n-Track website and he'll usually get back to you within a week. It is especially important that you do this if you think you've found a real bug in the software. He really will fix things if he can reproduce your problem! Otherwise, he may be able to help you with your setup. Do not go sending in support requests for every single little problem though, as I'm sure he's pretty busy.

5) If you solve your problem by posting somewhere else or dealing directly with Flavio, be sure to return to tell us how you solved it.

By the way,whats the best mic under $50 to use with ntracks?

Tom,

You have to use a capacitor mic with good impedence to record ntracks into your soundcard. Otherwise, you need to mic a POD. This will cost a little more than $50, especially if you shop at some fancy name brand store like Radio Shack.

Like bdbdbuck I wasn't sure you're first question was serious, but your reply makes me think I was wrong to think it wasn't. So assuming you were asking about n-Track and not Tim Hicks' and Slackmaster2k's weak attempts at humor ( )


1) No n-Track is not free, but it is very inexpensive for what you get. It only costs $45 US for the 16-bit version, or $69 for the 24-bit version. It's quite the bargain.

2) There is no limit to the number of tracks you can record with it, at least no limit imposed by n-Track. The only limit is what your CPU, memory, soundcard, etc. can handle.




And by the way Tom and Slack, I tried micing my POD last night and I got no measurable level. I turned up the input AND output gain on my mic pre and all I got was the bleed through from my monitors. There was absolutely no signal at all coming from my POD. Did Line 6 solve this problem with the POD XT or do I have to buy a mic modeler to properly mic my amp modeler? This sh*t is just getting so confusing!!!

N-Tracks is $45.
As far as I know, the tracks are pretty much only limited by your computer's capacity. Someone posted where they were only able to get 80 tracks. I personally don't see me needing that many anytime in the near future.

If I offended you Jimi, I apologise. We probably have a little language problem here. The last time you asked this question in the 'what is N-track' thread you were given this answer;

N-track. 8-track. 48-track. 4-track. 2-track.

The n (number of tracks,) depends on your computers capabilites. This will depend upon a number of variables, (os, speed, memory, plug-ins, etc...

What he is saying is that the amount of tracks is only limited by the size and power of your computer, as well as the number of effects you are running. The better the machine, the more tracks you will have available. I hope this helps.

I just purchased N-Track and I have a Santa-cruz Soundcard in a Pentium 4. I have been digging around and found it is not wise to plug anything but the computer mic in the mic input. I have also found it is best to go through a mixer. My question is I have a Fender Pro Audio powered mixer, it is a six channel powered head. Can I use this? or do I have to buy some other mixer?

Use the mixer line out jack or one of the inserts to the first click on one of the channels, otherwise if you use one of the other outs you will probably fry your P4.
