Rat To Rat Remix Revel Round 2

In round one we saw an interetsting show of two different mixing styles square off in the clinic arena. RAT A chose a more conservative method and produced a clean nicely mixed, well balanced mix with easily distinguishable tracks providing definition and clarity as well as easily understanable lyrics. Rat B took a more savage route and put forth a more in-your-face mix but sacrificed the clarity, and a lot of noise was pointed out rearing it's ugly head in the piece. The favorite mix was done by Rat A.

Now we will see a different angle with a much different song. Again we will see the different mixing techniques put forth by the two rats, but it may take an unexpected twist.

You can download the two different mixes of Polly Ethelline at:
http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/...=1155&alid=104

Rats has taken his turn at mixing and mastering and Track Rat has done his magic on the same song. In this exploratory excercise we are looking for technical critique from the great minds of the clinic, and a pick for your personal choice of which mix better suits the song.

As previously stated, this is not a contest, just having some fun and hopefully learning a thing or two along the way!

At the end of the week we may or may not reveal the identity of the mystery rats!

Thumbs up A Wins Again

The lows and highs are hyped so much in B that I can't hear the vocal in B. B sounds the way that I "master" stuff, which is just not good.

I know it's not a contest, but B lost.

I see.

Well.

OK.

Ummm...

I want to post the final chapter to the Rat Race but it seems I have exceeded my file rotation on Nowhere, and since I have exceeded by uploads by a few thousand bytes I'm locked out of updating the existing files with new ones!

That and I don't think Track Rat can handle all this embarassment!

Any ideas?

rats.... like you still care ... (about round 2 anyways)

The reverb, separation, and balance were (again) better in Mix A... and less hiss again in the intro...

I like this song of yours the best... gimmme a shout when you get the disks pressed, and I'll buy one.

FWIW, I do like the spacey space spaceout FX you used--er, "rat B" used ... that stuff were'nt in mix A...

Chad

party anticipate! Shit for some reason the forum didn't bump the thread and list your name as the last response so I didn't know there was a reply. This board has been acting strange lately. Thanks man. Actually Track DID have those spaced out samples in his mix, they were just a little further back in the mix and not so prominent.

BTW you and anyone else that has responded to these threads is welcome to free copy of the CD, just send me a PM with your snail mail addy!!!

This was probably my favorite of the 3 track rat remixes. He kept everything strong, the drums sound 10 times better, the vocs are clear and present, and I especially like the way he took that gritty analog keyboard that floats through the verses and laid it over the bassline, it just kicks ass, perfect. It seems like whenever I tried all I could get it too sound like was a mosquito! The last softer section of the song was really cool too. He gave it a more psychedelic groove (which always scores points with us) by pushing up the feedbacky guitar in the mix. Very cool.

Anyway, thanks for playing along peeps!
