Sony MDM-X4 MkII Minidisk 4 track

My first digital experience was with the Sony MDM-X4 MkII Minidisk 4 track.

Anyone have this old box?
don't think they even sell it anymore, it has no backup! And no digital out.

I liked the analog mixer it's super easy to route, barely any menus to go thru.

I don't think it's very popular...

IMHO, the minidisc 4 and 8 track portastudios are generally the
best for a songwriter or home musician who wants a simple
multi-track with good sound quality to make quality song or
artist demos. Without launching into a computer based set-up
with its attendant learning curve, you can be more focused on
performing well or ideas without as many distractions.

P.S. To get better mileage in your recordings, you may want to
get a better quality mic pre than what's provided in your
portastudio.

I Just logged on and you got my attention, Just a few weeks ago i bought my first minidisk machine ..i ve got to say this thing sounds nice.. i'm an old school analog guy love that has been dreaming about a teac 1/2 inch 15 ips machine forever but i cant see spending three grand for it. Mars music is going out of business ..i picked this puppy for 449.00 God is so good..

do you have any tips/ideas i could use ? I'm a bassist/vocalist, with a home setup!

I have a Teac 40-4 4 track 1/4" reel to reel also, it's probably a worth a few
hundred dollars. I wish it were worth three thousand!

Thanks for the link. Interesting info, not done reading it all. Cool reading about the data compression inner workings and differences between the types of comp.

After trying out the Fostex MR-8, tho, it's hard to go back to the MD. I'm thinking of uploading from my old MD's to the MR-8 and synching for the 4 tracks, 2 at a time. it just seems easier to mix and .wav and burn that way.

I'll still compare audio from both. I may sell it someday but with the prices coming down so much, not sure if i'll get much....

I was used to the cassette 4 and 8 tracks and the mixers on 'em so, when I saw the MD with the nice mixer, i got that one. I think the Yamaha also has same looking mixer section.

I also hate using mouse for so much stuff and knowing the PC is so unreliable, (being a tech for years) I didn't even consider doing it that way.

I did have a glitch and lost the intro to a track once on my MD and it freaked me out. I couldn't believe it could do that. a big chunk of sound just gone. It suprised me and I never thought of the machine the same way again, especically b/c i couldn't back it up any way. I always had to just copy the song on the same disk and then work on that version. not a secure backup. Not sure about the Yamaha, hope it's better.... Still tho, it only happened one time....
