Miking Acoustic Guitar....

some may like a matched pair of mics in an X/Y.....some may like a LD/SD combo.....some may throw an omni in there.......

Gidge - uses a v67 out front of the guitar and either a mxl603 or a ecm8000 over the shoulder pointed out in front the guitar......

OK..for a two mic setup.. large D.{cart} from the bridge to the endpin and a Small D {cart} at about the 12th fret..But I find for me that if its gotta sit in a dense mix 12th fret Small D. is enough
Over the shoulder is cool for me if the guits a little too brite and its heavely strummed

Depends on the song....

1. ECM8000 pointed at the 12th fret. Nice wooden room through an Audio buddy. Really nice clear finger picking on a steel string. Good sound for the song.
2. MXL 1000 pointed at the 8th fret. Sound proofed room (my own...lots of random foam and carpet nailed up to all the walls/ceiling). Audio buddy. Picked steel string.
3. MXL 1000 on 10th fret. ECM 8000 over the shoulder. Classical guitar. Behringer Eurorack pre amp. Miced in Living room. Great sound. Very defined.
4. Shure SM-58 on 12th fret. Steel string. Rythem guitar, picked. No preamp. Great sound for the song.

One mic about 12" from the 10th fret, off axis. Usually an Audio Technica 4033 - medium diaphram condenser. Presonus MP20 preamp and an ART Pro VLA optical compressor/limter.

what I used on a couple of my friends classical pieces was:
AT3035 pointing at the body, just a little bit to the right of the soundhole (from players point of view), and an SM58 pointing at around 12th fret...and I went for the same signal strength from both mics (as much as I could match them)...the sound was very "fluffy" and warm..we loved it

I place a 441 at about four inches pointed at about the 16th fret. The mic is at about a 30 degree angle crossing the sound hole.

This is a general placement. It depends upon the song and how I'm playing that day.

Couple of different ways, depending on the guitar...

1) Octava MK012 about a foot out, 6 inches above the neck, pointed down at the 12th fret. 2nd 012 about 8 inches away from the body, pointed about 6 inches below the bridge, on about a 45 degree angle.

2) I've used this technique with the 012's and my pair of ADK A-51's. One pointed at the 12th fret from about a foot out and 6 inches above the neck, and one over the right shoulder, with the mic pointed down at about a 45 degree angle, and the diaphram pointed parallel to the player's shoulder.

I got great results recently with a 414 about 3 inches away, pointed about 2" from the bridge towards the guitar's tail, combined with a SD condensor about 3 inches away at about the 12th fret.

The band kept raving about the guitar sound. Of course, I was very pleased because I had heard about the technique on homerecording.com's bbs.

So what do use guys use (mic and pre) when miking an acoustic guitar from a distance (2-3 feet away) without getting much noise; especially when going into a +4dBu input on a recorder?

I use 2 mxl603s in an xy at the twelth fret. In a dead room,through a Yamaha MLA7 preamp. with a set of Elixer .010. on a deep bowl ovation 6 or 12. or my L5.

I find the best results happen when there is a full moon.

I've never miked a guitar from that distance. No condensors. No +4 level recorder either.

Over the shoulder is cool for me if the guits a little too brite and its heavely strummed{sometimes a ML19 ribbon]And the pre's are a pair of Grace 101's and for the single mic in a dense mix, SM81and a EventEMP1 for a pre..Guits are Taylors, Takamines ect. mostly dreds and recently a Ramerez{sp?}Flaminco{very good player} with some distance aprox. 2' for the bridge for the KSM44 and 4' for the SM81..
