Members average number of mics and a list...
Just out of curiosity, wondering how many mics the average member here has, and, if there is anyone that has more than Harvey.
I'll start with my updated list and what I paid for them. I have bought used only and have saved a ton of money. I think these have all been aquired in the last 2 months. (1)Neumann TLM-103 $400 (1)Sennheiser MD-441 Blackfire $259 (2)Sennheiser MD-421-U-5 $100 for the pair (4) Sennheiser MD-504 $60 each (1) Beyerdynamic Soundstar II $60 (1) Beyerdynamic TGX-50 kick mic ($130 I think) As you can see I like German mics (2) MXL 603's (1) Behringer ECM 8000 $30 And I think thats it. Total: 13 $1319 Not bad I think.

I've done this one before, but will again if anyone is really interested. Total amount is plenty over 13, but certainly isn't more or as much as Harvey, but I'm working on it!

Track, what do you think of these mics? I see them on e-bay frequently and was thinking about a purchase.

They're electret condensors. They take one AA battery each and won't run on phantom power. Once upon a time they were OK but there are so many decent quality small diaphram condensors out there cheap (Octavas, MXL-603s,etc) that unless they were damn near free, I'd pass on them. I rarely put them up anymore. The self noise is a little high.

You Boys have a serious addiction that needs to be addressed!
These are ones laying around, most everything else is usually addressed by rental. Demo work only! 2 sm57's (snare)(misc) 2 d-112 (kick, floor tom) 1 SP b1(vocals) 1 MXL v63m (bg vocals) 2 Md-421 (toms) 1 Shure pe50sp (sits in front of my Marshall 1/2 stack) 2 EV mc100 (decoy for children) Im holding off getting a set of sd condensors until spring. Usually I rent akg451's for overheads on drums. I need the sd condensors for acoustic guitars an other stringed instruments. I really think that if it wasnt for spending 5 grand on mtb racing a few years ago, id have more. SoMm |

If you guys noticed... a TLM-103 and a Sennheiser 441 new together cost more that what I paid for the 2 and 11 other mics... this happens by vigilant searching on ebay and elsewhere. Well worth the time if you can spare it.
13 mics for the price of 2... almost all of them resellable for what I paid for them, if not more. My next purchase will be selling the MXL 603's and trying to find a pair of Sennheiser MKH small diapragms to replace them. The Senns are about $1200 each new, very expensive, nice mics. My RNP will be here wednesday, supposedly. Woohoo! Peace!

Hey, I hope you guys will remember that we do have TWO studios here, and we do a lot of metal bands (sometimes very large drum sets), so our mic locker reflects that.
For example, this weekend, we're recording two metal bands at the same time and we'll be using about 15 mics in each studio. We do have a lot more vocal mics then we really need, but eventually, that will thin down a bit. Plus we sometimes do other genres, which require a whole different set of mics. A few months ago, I recorded a bluegrass band, using 5 MXL 603's for banjo, guitar, fiddle mandolin, and dobro, plus an ECM8000 for upright bass and the Marshall V77 for vocals. In this case, having 7 MXL 603's just covered the band I did, and left two extras, in case Alex needed a pair for overheads in the other studio. He went with a pair of MC012's for overheads, but if he wanted small omnis, having just one set would have screwed us. IF he really needed to use small omnis, we still had a pair of Audix TR-40's and T.H.E. KP-6M's, so we were covered. Since we're both doing metal bands this weekend, we'll have a wide range of small diaphragm mics to choose from for overheads. Alex will probably use a pair of 603's or the MC012's, and I'll use either the 603's or a pair of omnis for overheads. |

(1) Rode NTK - $450
(1) MXL V67 - $200 (1) CAD M37 - $100 (1) Oktava MC 012 - $100 (2) MXL 603 - $140 (2) Behringer ECM 8000 - $70 (2) SM 57 - $100 (1) Peavey PV - $20 (1) SM 48 - $40 (1) AT Pro 25 - $70 For a total cost of $1290. I think my mic cabinet is an archetypal "Home Recording BBS" mic cabinet. I seem to have most of the "bang-for-buck" mics that everyone is constantly hyping on this board. |

1- SP-C1 $199
1- MXL V63M $70 2- SM57s 1- SM58 2- EV N/D? Next up will be the SP C4s when they become available. Since I don't record any drums, this should give me a decent basic setup. |

Mine is due to grow before and at Christmas, as I already know my wife has gotten me at least 2 SM57 Mics, plus I ordered a new Marshall Mic from Musiciansfriend.com, the MXL 990 Large Diaphram with shockmount and Pop screen.. Marshall support tells me that it's basically MXL 603s electronics in a larger body and larger diaphram. Should be interesting...
Currently: 3- CAD10 Dynamic Mics 1- Marshall MXL 603s 1- Behringer ECM8000 2- Oktava MK-012 (same as the MC-012 with 1 capsule and -10db attenuator) Hmm...I didn't count my antique 1/4" plug Radio Shack Mic.... I do use a few of our singer's and our guitarist's mics. They are all Dynamics. One is a Sennheiser..sumpin', and the others, I'm not sure...

Any of you with the whole slew of cheap LD mics ever thought of selling two of them and digging into ebay for a used Sennheiser 441? Not the 421, the 441. Much nicer mic. They are going regularly for $250 now. Check into a Beyer M88 too. I have about 20 items I am constantly watching on my ebay watch-list. If something gets out of my range, I delete it. I wait until about the last 3 hours to bid ususally. Ususally someone outbids me. Occasionally, I win an excellent deal. Its that occasion that makes it all worth it.
My Sennheiser md-504's all came with clips except one, and I paid $60 for two of them, $54.50 for one, and like $50 for the other. New they were $300 for a 3 pack. I got 4 for around $224. Not bad really. I am thinking about getting 2 more, since I would rather use these in place of an sm57 in most cases, and get them cheaper and they sound a little better to me. The $60 one and the $54 one were both brand new in the box. I'm babbling... later....
