Recording bass direct using insert effects

I have a vs840 and I was thinking about upgrading to the 840ex. One of the reasons for the upgrade would be for the bass modeling (i think that's what they call it). I have been previously a bit dissatisfied with my direct recorded bass so I was wondering if anyone has used the bass inserts "effects" with any sucess. Will it really improve my sound or is it just a bunch of hype? Thanks

I've got the 1680 and get good bass sounds using the bass inserts. I get even better sounds running my bass through a Joemeek VC6Q preamp/compressor/eq box.
