Can the VS880ex record from more than 4 simultaeous sources?

You should be able to record 8 trcks at a time. I'm not trying to make you sound ignorant, but what do you mean exactly. You can always run sub mixes also. I have a yamaha O1v run into 7/8 and a Makie 1402pro run into 1/2.

No. Or at least not as a stand alone. 4 inputs limit us to four simultaneous record. You can technically record more if you mix them via an external source, but still only four ins with the 880 itself. Thats to say you can mix your whole rig in your board to have many mics, guitars and what not.. but then it is all converted to a single input into the VS. So if you do go the external mixer route... be sure you are happy with the mix. In short, no you and the boys can not all play at once. you must take turns.
Footnote: option B would be to link 2 880's, but thats less than cost effective.
