roland vs-1680 and outboard gear

I currently own a roland vs-1680 without the expansion boards. I want to buy and outboard noise gate and possibly even a compressor/limiter. Are these ouboard pieces compatable with the 1680? If they are, please explain how I can hook them up to the 1680. If they're not, is it just more conveneint to buy the expansion boards?

Don't quote me on this, but I think you can hook up outboard gear through the aux ins and outs. I think you need to bounce in order to record the fx, but I've never tried this, so a second opinion here would be valid. On a side note, I've been pretty satisfied with the noise gates on the effects cards.

Let me know what you find out. I just got a 1680 and only bought one effects card. I'd like to use my Lexicon MPX-100 with it as well. On that note, how do you connect it (the Lexicon) digitally to the 1680? Perhaps this is not possible. Are the aux. inputs analog? Perhaps stupid questions but I'm a newbie when it comes to the 1680.
