Cakewalk Home Studio 2002 Timing Probs

I recenlty made the mistake of buying a Compaq with Win XP preloaded. Ever since I have had problems.

First of all my Cakewalk 6.0 wouldn't work so I bought Cakewalk Home Studio 2002. Now the real problems begun.

Everything on Home Studio works great as long as I'm recording one track. As soon as I atempt a second track I have problems. The second track of a project falls out of sync (time) with the first track at about 24 Secs into the song. The second track seems to fall behind by one beat or more.

I'm not useing any MIDI devices. All of my recordings are done useing a microphone and a guitar.

I lay the guitar track, then try to sing the lead vocals on the second track. The vocals fall out of time at 24 secs into the song when I play it back.

I'm useing a "Soundmax" soundcard that came pre-installed with my Compaq 6000 which has a PIV 1.6Ghz Proc., 256MB Ram, etc. I've been told on more than one occasion by Cakewalk Support that his card is more than enough to do what I am wanting.

I've spoke with customer support (if you can call it that) three times and they keep telling me to play with my buffer settings.

I actually got HS to work a few time and completed a few songs with no timing problems and then when I least expect it, they return.

First off you problems could be attributed to a number of factors:

-Apps running in the background
-The soundcard sharing an IRQ with another device in your system
-The souncard itself (drivers)

I recently purchased a system with onboard audio. Even though it was not exactly the same situation as yours, I did run into issues. On a previous system I no problems playing a MIDI track though my SB Live and audio through my Audiophile 2496 in HS2002. Everything worked fine and timing was always good.

When I tried the same setup with the onboard sound (SoundMAX) playing MIDI tracks and the Audiophile playing audio, the two tracks were completely out of sync with the onboard card lagging behind...

My point here is that if your are using your system's audio for anything other than watching DVD's or playing games, forget about onboard audio and just do yourself a favor and buy a dedicated audio recording card. It will save you alot of hassle in the long run.

What is your Clock Source set as?

Make sure it's Audio right from the start.

Should be listed under Options and then Project Options. It is in Sonar anyway.

brzilian was right... and the CS could be also...
You're running on audio recording latency prob.
It's only two tracks anyway, that's why it's so strange. I wouldn't be surprized if it occurs on your 28th tracks... but second track ? there's gotta be sumthin you miss.
How long the song's length ? 24 secs fall, you mean 24 ms ? I just curious about your buffer setting, and the driver (It's winXP right ?). Have you tried playing around with it ? just trying to slide sumthin' here and there and find a different result ? What's other device you have there (Modem, Ethernet, etc...) ? Do you run Memory Manager things ? How fast your HD ? check 'em out... check THIS LINK just for XP & audio info...
