best bass track i've ever done

today, i recorded the most consistent (dynamically) track ever on the bass and the timing was just dead right.

then, i recorded it again.

the first keeper, i recorded it with the tips of my fingers playing between the two soap bar pickups. the treble provided by my fingertips really came through; however, for this particular groove i wanted something a little less punchy and a little more laid back.

the 2nd keeper, i recorded with more of the meat of my fingers with my thumb rested on the B string and striking the strings with my hand positioned above the top soap bar and it turned out just right.

the best part is, this is the first time i've recorded a bass track that didn't need to be compressed because of uneven dynamics. i may still compress it later when i'm ready to really mix the tune, but it sounds very good in the current rough mix without any processing at all. first time for everything! i hope i still like it tomorrow when i give it a critical listen.

i used:
conklin groove tools 5 string (with volume at 8 and using more front pickup than rear) into a tech21 sansamp bass DI at 1/2 volume level and full blend into a mackie 1604 using the insert so all i've got is the pre-amp of the mixer.

laying out: -70db.

average RSM: -12db

peak: -6db

gotta wait until i get the vocalist to come in, get it mixed, get the copyright, and get it registered with BMI...

then I'll post it to the MP3 mixing clinic.
