Vocal and instrument not at center

My vocal track is supposed to be at the center. My pan setting shows it so. But I'm hearing it from left of the center. It's not just vocals as some of the instruments (bass, bass drum) are with the vocal. I have been suspecting that but it became crytal clear after I listened to a couple of CDs through the same mixer while playing my song in SONAR. I would appreciate any opinions/suggestions.

What CD player ? PC's CD-ROM or external CD player ?What mixer ? kernell mixer (Windows) or external mixer ?
Check your wave block (if it is stereo, compare the blocks L & R ).
Check the SONAR's main bus pan/balance.
Check the kernell mixer for wave & master output balance.
Check your cables/jack.
Check your external mixer channel's balance, or try route to other channels.

Back for more...

...also make sure you're not in offset mode. This will wreak havok with your panning.

I'm sorry Chuck... What is offset mode?

Another weird stuff I'm encountering is this. I want the VSC drum part to be at the center but the VSC pan is all the way to the right. I try to bring it to the center but as soon as I hit play it jumps right back to the right. I got a feeling that I might be able to edit the event list but the list doesn't show stuff like pan control. I don't know where the event is recorded.

I believe offset mode is designed to be used for calibration purposes. However, a neat by-product is it gives you the ability to "offset" established settings on a track. For ex., let's say you have a track with a volume envelope on it and then decide you want to raise the overall volume of the track by 2 db. You could go in and edit every node on the track envelope to increase it by 2 db. OR you could go into offset mode and change the track offset by 2 db. In other words, the track reading would now show -8db - but the REAL setting is -6db (since you have offset it by +2 db).

There is an icon at the top of the track view window that toggles you into and out of offset mode. It a very nice feature if you have a mix you've worked on for a long time with lots of envelopes, and then realize you want to make an overall change on a track without distrubing the envelopes.

As for your pan problem, it sounds to me like you have a pan envelope on the track. That is the behavior you would get. See if there is one and delete it.

4ever:
i've done that same thing myself. you have to be very careful to have the gain on your stereo output evenly matched.

what i do is to send the same note (piano or bass drum) to both channels and play with the trim until i get both sides to match in the meters. not very scientific but it works for me.

dachay2tnr:
i didn't really like that offset feature until very recently, it really does come in handy for the exact reason that you listed; however, once i'm done playing with the offset i then select the whole track [f9/f10] and then move the necessary envelope appropriately.
