monitor levels during recording

Hi all,

I ran into a problem last night where, when I got the recording level set to a good level it was too loud in the headphones for monitoring - I couldn't hear the other tracks well enough, even maxing them out. The recording track monitor level was just too high. Is there a way to adjust this? Or to turn off monitoring of the recording track altogether? I couldn't find anything about it in the help files.
