Not sure. Is perhaps the bit rate of the wave file not matched to the project settings you have in Sonar. For ex., are you trying to import a 24 bit wave file into a 16 bit project?

midi drivers

I think another issue I have is when I start up Sonar it says I have to choose midi drivers or I wont be able to hear anything.im lost as to how to do that. There is a window that show what seems to be midi drivers but they dont seem to be right. I cant even get the counter to run when I try to play downloaded wav file. Troublesome!

Not sure I understand you here, Jim.

First off, what audio card do you have? Is it 24 bit capabale? If so, you should set both the Audio Driver and File Bit Depth to 24 bits (Options > Audio). Reprofile the sound card, and then (I think) you need to close and reopen Sonar.

If you don't have a 24 bit capable sound card, the leave the Audio Driver bit rate at 16, but change the File Bit Depth to 24.

After doing one of the above, you should be able to import the 24 bit wave files.

Don't worry about your midi drivers for the time being, work on the first problem. You don't need the midi to import and play a wave file. (The midi problem may be the result of your sound card not having midi capabilities.)

I have never used Sonar...dont have a clue.Im thinking its just me not know how to get it running.I imported 13 tracks of a song from my desktop where they were saved. After I imported them I hit play and nothing.Trust me,Im a total idiot when it comes to Sonar.Any clues Dachay2tnr? When you hit play, does the cursor start moving across the track, but you don't hear anything. Or does absolutely nothing at all happen?

If the former, check what you have your Track Out and Main Out settings going to, and make sure that's where your speakers are connected. (And make sure the speakers are turned on )

If the latter, try increasing your latency setting. Options > Audio and move the slider all the way to the right. Also go to the Input Monitoring tab and disable anything that shows up there.

So then did you increase your latency setting?

Makes no sense. Unless you changed the Audio Driver Bit Depth to 24 bits.

If you are using the computer's onboard sound card, it is likely that it's only 16 bit capable. You should set the Audio Driver to 16 bits, but leave the File Bit Depth at 24.

Bottom line is that you should be able to move the slider, and the buffers should not be greyed out. It almost sounds like Sonar is not detecting an audio card. What shows up in the menu at the top of the page for Playback Timing and Record Timing Masters?

I set sonar to 24 bit. That is what is comming in from the hd 24.It was on 16 bit but at 16 I could not import any audio My sound card is yes, the stock on that came with the computer. When I go to options and click on audio, there is nothing for input monitor.Nothing at all to choose from. I'll look for the playback and record timing master. Thanks greatly,Jim

Jim - There are two places where you can set 24 bits. If your sound card is only 16 bit capable (which I suspect it is) you should only set the FILE BIT DEPTH to 24 bits. Leave the other one (Audio Driver) set to 16 bits.

Try that, and then rerprofile the sound card. See if that helps.

At the bottom of the Options > Audio (general) page there is a button labeled Wave Profiler. Click the buton and follow the instructions.
