We are using a Tiny computer, 6GB HD pentium II 64mb ram with a Yamaha DSXG legacy sound system. We instaled Cakewalk 2002
Home Studio and have no problems with midi in and out, but as soon as we select audio we have nothing but drop outs.

Sometimes the thing will run for ten minutes but it nearly always drops out as soon as you try to start the record mode. We have read the help line and are just getting more and more confused as to what we could be doing wrong

This could be many things. Is the soundcard up to the task?

Try raising the latency, Options -> Audio -> "latency slider"

Many thanks. We've increased the latency, which seems to have cured the problem, but now we have a delay. Any ideas?

By the way, the sound card (Yamaha DSXG) is supposed to be a good one (but how can you tell whether it's supposed to be able to do this job?).

Thanks for the info Phyl ,what is the minimum of memory you would sugest as we are only useing home studio on a small scale
at the moment.I would think you mean upin the the ram memory

The cheapest thing you can do to improve a computer's speed is add more RAM, it's so cheap right now I would add as much as your machine can take (or you can afford). I bought a Dell Pentium IV recently and immediately upp'ed the RAM to 1 gB. Try to get up to at least 256 or 512 mB. Your software package (Cakewalk) probably has a minimum recommended amount of memory, this is the amount you'll need to get performance that is barely acceptable, more is always better.

The next thing to do is up the processor speed but of course this means buying a new motherboard (or computer) and buying more RAM to get it up to snuff.

maybe my machine is strange and maybe I'm not so smart but...

my Sonar stopped dropping out after I got a faster CPU. I had all kinds of dropouts with a 1GHz Athlon and 512MB of RAM. After my mobo crapped out, I replaced it with a 1.8GHz athlon and only 256 RAM and get no dropouts (knock on wood.).

Thanks for all your help and comments guys. It looks like I will have to make with things as they are for now until some thing like a new computer comes along.In the mean time It looks like my old Tascam 244 is going to live a little bit longer. All the best and keep laying down the tracks.

Slowhand - I don't know if HS2002 features "input monitoring", but if it does that could be the cause of the delay you are hearing.

Check Options>Audio and see if there is an Input Monitoring tab. If there is, make sure everything is disabled. There is no way your system will be able to handle this feature.
