Question A good mixer

Can anybody recommend a good mixer. I know you will ask how many channels so this is what I have to say: There apears to be a correlation between # of channels and number of knobs(or eq settings) so I figure i would go for one with a fair number of channels(unless i get a mackie, big $$). I'm initially going to use it for my guitar but i might start a band and record more channels so that further reinforces my more chan./better idea.

I do not care about preamps or effects cuz i'm gonna get a seperate units so i just need something with good sound. The behringers are really cheap and the mackies opposite but are the mackies worth it?

Yeah the Mackies are worth it.

You don't say what format you will be using to record.

Good pre's equal good sound, along with quiet circuitry. You don't want a bunch of mixer internal noise on your tracks. I will refrain from bashing the "B" desk as I have no experience with it.

TASCAM, Mackie, and Soundcraft are all good quality consoles.

Didn't I reply to this post already today???

Question

Oh yeah, I'm using my computer to record it. And how do you mount mixers on racks? Do they screw in vertical in the rack case or something? No, you maybe answered someone else's post.

Not all mixers are able to be mounted in racks.

They usually use a piece of angled steel or aluminum attached to the sides of the mixer.

I would find having a mixer mounted in the vertical a little disorienting. Precise fader movements would seem difficult at best.

Mine wouldn't fit in a rack anyway.

Just out of curiosity, If want to buy seperate preamps and your recording on your computer then why do you need a mixer? What sound card are you using?

Angry

To answer TexRoadKills question, I prefer to use hardware rather than software because its not only more rewarding for the money (having a physical device to show off), but its easier for me than moving the mouse around. I have a Hercules GameTheater XP which has S/PIDF i/o which is another incentive to get the soundcraft. But since its so expensive, i'll either get a cheaper one then upgrade, or wait and save up. I don't need one yet, but i just like to plan ahead.
