Which Mic?

OK, i am completing my quest for a good list of mics to be flexible with in the studio.

I am going with a one or a pair of AKG414B-TL II for vocals.

I am going with the AKG D112 for the kick drum mic.

Now I need to know what is a good Mic for

Drums

Guitars (stringed instruments)

Other question....do you guys think the AKG414B-TLII would be suitable for stringed instruments? I am trying to cut costs but not not cut corners either....

I will be running this all through a Mackie 24-8...

Thanks!

Sounds to me like you could use a good pair of small-diaphragm condensers. That's generally what is reached for on drum overheads and/or accoustic instruments.

Some possiblilities in the budget range would include the Oktava MC012, or the Elations, both Russian manufacturers, or the Marshall mxl 603. If you're trying to cut costs but not corners, there is no shame in owning any of these mics.

Some of the best that I can think of, regardless of budget, would probably be either the Nemann km184, or the Earthworks Earthworks SR77.

Highly recommended by many top engineers. And not-so-top engineers, too.

chessrock has some good suggestions for sure. I have some KM-184's and Earthworks SR-71's and they're killer mics for sure but a mic that works well on drums AND guitar cabs or evean acoustic one mic I've used a lot comes to mind, AT4033. The swiss army knife of mics. And about half the price of the Neumann or the Earthworks.

The 414's are great on strings. I agree with Chessrock's suggestions on small diaphragms, all fine mics. In between the overheads and the kick mic, you'll need some dynamics. For cheap SM57 works just fine and also is great for mic'ing cabs. For money, I would consider a pair of SM-7's, which will be good on drums, and can be very effective vocal mics with a different flavor than the 414's, good for screamers in particular.-Richie
