silence between songs
ok, once I got, let's say 10 songs to burn to a CD, how should go about inserting the silences in between songs? Open a wav editor and put however long of silence at the end of the song or?
And, if I want no space in between 2 songs, do I just leave them the way they are, and they will turn out continuous?
Thanks in advance.

depending on what software you have, you should be able to PQ code the cd, meaning you can decide on the pauses inbetween tracks.

As LWS pointed out, this is accomplished by the software you use to burn the CD. Most of the better stuff allows you to set the amount of silence between tracks to whatever length you want.

Ok, so I leave no silence on each song/wav file, and use the burning software to insert the silences? I use Nero, does it have this function?
Thanks

it's very dependant on the song , and the song following it, but i would leave a little silence. it depends, some cd's, i may crossfade one track into another if i have to so that involves no silence whatsoever. i would really use wavelab to PQ code a cd because of it's excellent playback facility. you can play from the end of a track, into the new one and monitor the pause times. it's a little tricky in Nero.however, you can adjust pause times in nero, it's in it's main window.beware, that at the start of a cd, some cdplayers need a minumum time pause in order to read the cd properly.

You're talking about the wave files themselves? I usually leave about 1/4 to 1/2 second of silence at the beginning. The ending is a little trickier. Make sure you leave enough space for the music to completely die down. This is particularly true if the song ends in a fadeout. Be sure it has reached complete silence before trimming the end.
As for the amount of pause between songs, LWS has it correct. It depends on the song itself and the song it leads into. A heavy, emotional song will tend to command more silence before the next song, than a lighter song would - particularly if it is followed by a cheerful song. The listener needs some time to adjust.
Generally if you just listen to the end of the song, you'll have a pretty good idea of when you are ready for the next song to start.

Firstable, Thank you, LongWaveStudio, and dachay2tnr for taking the time to answer my questions!
LWS: what if I have this really long song/wav file, and I want to set them as 2 different tracks on the CD? Do I just cut up the wav file into 2, save them as 2 seperate wav files, then burn them with no PQ code at all? Will they come out continuous?
dachay2tnr: thank you for the tips on the short silence at the beginning/end of each song. Does the silence at the beginning of the song do anything besides the "mood"??

You should not cut this into two different wave files. What you want to do is to place a track marker at the spot when you burn the CD. This will carve the song into two tracks, while still leaving it as a single song. A listener can then skip directly to that "track," but if played continuously there will be no break. I assume Nero allows for this (although I'm not familiar with Nero).

No, not really. You could trim all the silence out if you wanted. Leaving a little bit of silence is just my own practice. No real technical reason for it.

make sure that whatever you do, you dont alter with the PQ code at the start of the disc though. if you make it too short, some cd players will not read the disc. ive never dabbled with this so some one may be able to correct me, but just leave it alone!

Hey Al,
Yes Nero does this. In the compilation info window I think there is a check box that addresses the 2 second space between windows. I think nero will even allow you to blend between tracks with no space and a marker. Hope this helps
