effects preview help!

OK, so the first time I installed CEP 2.0 I had no problem using the effects preview feature, and actually never had to wait too long, since I have (I think) a fairly fast system. Now, after reinstalling it, I can't hear anything when I hit the preview button, but I can hear regular track playback in both multitrack view and waveform view. Is there something stupid I'm missing (I hope).

Some other detail:
using Echo Mia ins and outs
Win98se
512M RAM
Athlon 1.2GHz Thunderbird

Please someone have an easy answer, since the preview feature is essential. If I can't use it, I'll dump this program.

Oh, right! Under device properties in Edit view, I had the wrong devicec checked for the box on the upper right, "Use this device in Edit view". You would think it would default to the same devices you were playing back through on multitrack view, but such is not the case.
