Question audio scrunched on vid/aud capture

I'm trying to capture video & audio from Hi8 tape, using Belkin USB audio/video capture device. I get 1 minute of video but ALL of the audio is compressed down to 7 seconds! (It sounds like the chimpmunks on methamphetamines). What gives? I've tried this in both Premiere 6 and SoundForge Studio 6 -- my primary interest in getting the audio, not the video.

Sounds like a problem with sample and bit rates. What rates is your video software setup to record the audio and video at?

Cool

Doesn't your Hi-8 camera have an S-video out?

If so- just tap the L-R audio pair and run that line level signal right into your soundcard. That's gotta play at normal speed, eh?

Well, the NTSC settings in Premiere call for 44100 Hz, 16-bit stereo. But I've tried it on other settings and it has the same effect.

As far as S-video, sure I've got that port but what effect does it have on audio capture? That's where my problem lies. I've tried direct patch into Mic in, as well as soundcard through the Belkin USB Video Bus II -- a device to digitize analog video, which only costs about $70 and by the way is worth the money -- that is, it has worked on other projects.

Right now the "best" capture is through Windows Sound Recorder, patched in through the Mic channel. But best isn't very good; I'd like to do better through the sound card.

Thanks for your input. I'm still listening!

It has the effect of sending the analog audio to your soundcard and uses the ADC on your soundcard to do the Digital Conversion. You said this was a Hi-8 camera- well that is an analog device. Maybe you mis-spoke and this is a digital-8 camera? Either way the S-Video out should provide some clean audio even if the Belch-Kin is mangling your signal.

That S-video Audio Out line L/R signals are Line level signals and should be patched to the Line in, not the Mic in.
