ceiling help pleeeeeeeeeeease!

I have a 24' by 20' live room. Problem? It's too live. I have carpet on the floor, bass traps, diffussors and resonators. I believe the problem lies in the ceiling. ITS FLAT! Its already finished so I cant make it slanted. What can I do: outside of putting in a drop ceiling? How about hanging a blanket from the ceiling? It's mainly just the drums that are too live. Hang a blanket above them?
Question, question, who has the answer?

peace

20' by 24' all walls have foam on them...at least two 5' by 5' peices. facing the window left wall has two slat resonators and foam between them...at a distance about five feet apart. but they are 5 by 5 all by themselves. One is eight feet tall . right wall has a difussor. Floor is carpeted. ceiling has nothing on it but it has been finished with popcorn like finish. There is still too much reverb time. Oh yeah I have a round bass trap in the corner with more to come. I feel the ceiling(10') is the problem...suggestions?

how have you determined that the decay rate is too long? and at what frequencies? what's leading you to this conclusion?

i would recommend you stop and start all over. you can add bass traps and such but if you're not designing (tunning) these to the problem area and with the right bandwidth, then they are of no use or make the problem worse.

are the walls made of dry wall?

what's underneath the carpet?

are the walls parallel?

Slate resonators are generally used to handle specific problems and are not wide bandwith devices. it depends on the width of the slat, percent slat to surface area, depth of slat and depth of area behind the slat. filling the slat resonator will widen the bandwith, but it may be missing the mark.

as you've described the room and surfaces, my estimate is your rooms decay rate is unbalanced at best. I think you have too much treatment (for 500Hz and above), especially with the carpet on the floor and mode problems below 200hz due to room dimensions of 20X24X10. the room can handle frequencies down to 565/24 = 24Hz. but the other dimensions of 20 and 10ft will cause mode stacking. i'll run a calc when I can and post it. also, your slat resonator may not be designed optimally for your room.

drywall on walls and concrete under carpet. The slat resonators have helped...I followed johns models off of his page. It was a terrible sounding room when I started...All walls are parrallel the slat resonators are at an angle.

Voodoo - it looks like you need to drop the reverb time across the full spectrum - try something like this, its a broad band absorber with a slot resonator built in. My posts are around the wrong way cos I forgot to attach this drawing.

cheers
John
