Best Tom/Snare and Bass Mics

Whats the best tom/snare and bass microphones. i've heard good stuff recorded with audix mics and i9'm kinda leanin towards em, but i'd like to get everyone opinion before i go out and buy em.

depends on your budget...im sure the "best" mic is outta my price range......

in my league, for snare and toms, sm57's work fine......the sennheiser 421 sounds alot better on toms but its out of my budget.....it even works for some kick sounds....

for kick, i like the AT ATMPRO25....but again, im a cheapskate.....

kick, I prefer EV RE20 and Beyer TGX-50 over most of the more common ones becuase they, ummm, sound better. The EV is probably the best kick mic around, and arguably one of the best all time dynamic mics, period. The TGX is great in a kick and on some other sources too. Never used some of the others, but I have used d112 and a few others, the EV kills most of em, imo.
Snare, 57 works fine, but I like a beta57, and if you can get the bank, go for a Beyer m88 and it'll double as a fantesticle guitar and vocal mic.

I use D2's on smaller toms and D4 on the large floor....57 on snare and Beta 52 on kick. No complaints. Check out other post for recording using these.

I've heard a lot of good stuff about the Audix D1 D2...ect. but have never used them. I the sennheiser 421s do sound killer, on kik and toms. I have one of them and wish i could get more. I use a 57 on snare and the sennheiser E604 on toms. They are the ones that come in the three pack and I am very satisfied with their results.

So i would say if you could, go with the 421s, but if not, the E604 are great too. They sound good on snare too.

I absolutely love EV N/D 308/408/468's on Toms. They are not only easy to position because they are relatively small, but they sound great.

I use i5s for my snare and toms and a D6 for kick. Sometimes I will use an SM7 on the snare and an i5 with the polarity switched on the snare bottom. Personally I find the Audix to sound a bit more modern and polished than the Shure's. The Sennheiser has this sort of quality as well but different. It all comes down to what sound you are after.

The TGX-50 is one of the best kick mic's made _ I don't know if Beyer still makes them, but I really wish I had purchased them rather than the D112's. It's a much more natural sounding mic. I have a love hate relationship with the EV's (both the RE-20 and RE-27, as well as the PL-20 - same basic designs) I used them for years in the studio, but there was just something about them that I didn't like - even though they did what they did flawlessly. You can record with one flat and it will yield a kick sound that can easily be used flat, but it seems like the extended low end I'm looking for is just never there.

Other mic's that work great on the kick drum include the Sennheiser MD-421, the MD 441 (which is one of my favorite mic's - ever) and surprisingly, the Sure SM-7, which is a vocal mic built on a yoke - normally used for voice in broadcasting.

I haven't tried the more economical Sennheiser (the 609?) but I've heard it is a fairly decent kick mic as well.

I didn't really care for the Sure kick mic (I can't even think of the model number) that most people use, but Sure makes a plate/pzm-style "boundary" mic that you lay inside the kick drum that I love.

I like the Shure beta 52, but you have to put it just inside the hole. If you put it inside the kick a couple inched away from the batter head, it sounds bad. If you put a D112 there, it sounds great.

I use 2 SM57's on snare and Sennheiser 604's or 421's on toms.

Hmmm, maybe that's why I didn't like the Beta 52? I didn't get to experiment with it - I just placed it where I would have normally placed a D112.

Yup, I don't like the D112 when placed just in the hole.
The 52 is really good at picking up the resonance of the front head while still getting the attack of the beater, but placement is important.

Toms (unless there really big) 604's

Overheads Oktavas mc012's on budget, sm81's on better budget, neumann km184's on huge budget. I've yet to try the LDC's up there haven't been in a room worth trying it.

For the money, cant go wrong with 57's
