Talking Trapped in illusion

Hi guys I'm new here! My first posting -- gee I'm noivus, here goes nuttin....I've been reading up on all the info at SAE & followed many a link to various Absorbers, traps, materials, insul, ratings, reverb calcs, standing waves etc etc... I'm curious how/why does traping work? Why do some guys use sealed traps & others front them with say peg board or slats? Also...if & when we determine what Hz were after (trapping) are trap dimensions (volume) critical? I guess with larger budgets this is whats addressed, but with home set ups, is it hit & miss? a little. Is trapping just an absorbtion illution? Isn't it still there (Hz) but reduced in level to the mix position?

Here's my situation, if you'd like to comment-- : ) thanks

My converted bedroom, 4.1m X 3.5m X 2.6m (L,W,H)

Active Monitors: (EMES) little beauties- on stands 990mm from floor, 760mm from front wall (I'm facing width) & 1060mm from sides, both the same.

I've got the usual lumps around 60/80Hz - 200Hz but after 40Hz it just goes up & up to about 10Hz is this usual. Ive ordered some ISB 5 Batts (Polyester) 85mm thick, cause I'm a glass pussy, and intend on glueing to masonite/ply and mounting on walls, everytime I think about trapping or toning the above mentioned Fqz I start getting a brain tumour! What to do, What to do...mmm

Anyway thanks for readin..onya

Paul

FWIW:

Everyone does seem to agree on a room such as yours needing some kind of treatment...the fistfights break out when deciding WHAT treatment...

I think a good rules of thumb are to identify what areas you can actually hear, and go from there. For example, if your room is rumbling with bass, agressively treat the bass issues (traps, LENRDs, etc)...If your room is obviously over-echoic in the uppermid/treble regions, then absorbers and diffusers are in order...

Also, there is no law that says you can't use readily available stuff for treatments...read somewhere (here?) that the super heavy blankets used by moving companies are very good treatments alll across the audio spectrum...skeptically I tried one and it works GREAT!

One of the best ways to treat a room is to attack the obviously gross stuff, then train your ears...Some years ago I did some work at a well known Nashville studio that has produced several top 5 hits over the years...I was expecting the epitome of treatment and room acoustics - to my surprise, the mixing room was (to my ear) excessively bright and had very little low end...the key to that studio's success was the man behind the board...

Point: the only thing that MUST be perfect is the engineer...most other things have some workarounds...

Let the flames begin...

I Mantra - welcome to HR

I actually wrote all that stuff at SAE and I'm a phonecall away as I live a few K's north of you in the Byron Bay area.
My phone number is 61 2 66795380. That's 0266795380 to you, the other is the international number.

BTW to everyone else you are welcome to phone me as well. Just remember that Australia is around 7 hours behind you yet one day ahead. So in the US call between 4pm and Midnight and you'll not get me out of bed

cheers
John

Q: I wonder if trappists make good traps?
A: They might, but once you're in them........

forgot to ask - hey John, did you manage to have a listen to that african percussion stuff? ( its also at http://www.mp3.com/bara_m'boup ), ''coz that was direct mic'd without any processing, in the "weird-drumbooth-with-the-floating-floor-hinged-roof-and-slatted-variable-gap-converters-as-well-as-the-large-bass-trap-in-the-roof"

The Great Lakes of the Mid North Coast..................home away from home .

John,

You are a brave man putting your phone number up here............I'll keep it for emergencies .

I have the chance to buy some 2400x1200x50mm rigid acoustic glass with a foil layer on one side which raises the questions.........1; how effective is 50mm by itself, and........2; is it feasible to glue two layers together to make a 100mm sheet, if so, have you any opinions on whether to glue the foil sides together or on the outsides.....would this significantly affect the properties of the insulation?

Regards,

ChrisO
