Real nice guitar playing, and I really like the vocals on this.

Okay, you were asking specifically about the vox. IMHOP -- I think it does sound a little bit hot in the mix, but that may just be because you only have the guitar playing. It sounds like there is a bass on there as well, but this is mixed kind of low. For the way the song is presently the vox sounds a wee bit too loud, but as soon as you get some of those other instruments on there, it will probably compensate.

There seemed to be a few parts where the bass "missed its cue" so to speak and came in a bit late. It seems like the bass may need a little bit of a boost in the mix as well. This will be especially true once the drums go on there.

Nice start. Just a bit of tweaking and augmenting the arrangement.

The song itself sounds good. It will be interesting to hear this again when it is finished.

sounds like a pretty good start. i didn't find the vox too hot but i like my vox too hot to begin with so i'm probably a bad influence. i thought the vox were the best part of the mix actually.

the guitar performance was very good. can't tell if i like the mix of it though. listening through cheap headphones. sounded a little direct sometimes. i don't know how to describe that or if it's just my headphones, but i didn't get a real feeling of the resonance of the guitar in the mix.

the bass was consistently off on the timing. maybe since it's a rough cut it doesn't matter to you. did you play it afterward? do you have a click to play along with? it was just consistently late so i'm wondering if maybe it's the way you are monitoring while you are recording or something.

I think the vocals are sitting pretty good in the mix. It's a vocal tune and you want the vocals out front.....they may be just a tad hot but not much......maybe a little bit of reverb would soften them up some....I like them just the way are though.Catchy tune and the harmonies sound good too.

Decent enough song. I'd agree that the vocals are just a bit too hot. But just a bit. Maybe don't pan the harmony vox quite so hard...

I thought for the most part the bass was too low, although it really zings through at 2:33. Maybe compress it a bit.

In addition to drums and a lead, I think it needs something else. Another instrument, or a second guitar part. Just something to spice it up.

I don't think the vocals are too high considering the fact that you are going to add more tracks. Good voice! Good presence. Wish I had a voice like that. Sounds like you've got some potential for some really good range. I am an acoustic sorta person, so I like it with just the guit and bass. The picking in the intro sounds halting and unsure. I would get it down solid and redo it. I like the song.

A little Melissa Etheridge influence maybe?
Good start, I think once the rest of the song is together, the vox will be just right, they may seem hot since the rest is kind of empty. I liked the guitar, maybe would have liked to hear that a bit more. Keep it going

Thanks fellas...

for the good advice.....
I am still pretty new to this stuff....ya know?

To answer some questions....
The guitar was recorded simutaneously through an AKG condensor and DI through the Fishman on my Taylor 314CE...
EQed them both and panned 1/4th of the way each side.....thus the DI sound....... gonna scrap the DI and dupe the condensor and put a slight verb on one and pan the same way....perhaps a slight verb and slighter delay on one of the tracks....ya know?

I did record the bass.....about 4 days later through a POD (no effects....well...tube pre...) DI into an Audigy Platinum drive....in Cakewalk...
I had to wait until I figured out what I was gonna play....ya know??
I monitored through headphones...perhaps there was a latency issue....or it could be that I just suck at bass... probably.....

The singer is a friend of mine and we co-wrote the lyrics....
I will let her know that you guys dig her pipes....

I had thought at one time of adding keys......perhaps...we will see after the lead and drums if there is still room.........gonna work on that intro too......

Thanks again guys...I will re-post after the other tracks are added....we might just start from scratch anyways.....we shall see...
Take it easy,
Joe

hey joro, off to a good start.. Nice voice and nice sound on the acoustic.. The vox volume 'might' be good once the drums and other stuff is added.. I always add the vocals after the music is finished but I know that isn't always possible.. It's sounding good to me so far.. maybe some type of solo in there somewhere would be cool... ya know?

it sounds pretty solid..........
the acoustic sounds very direct-input........that's always good if that's what you're going for........i always prefer, a more miced sound...........all subjective there...........

the backing vocals sound nice...........the bass sounds a little off center........it's hard to tell for sure, but if it isn't centered, i would center it to give the track a little more balance......it can kind of create a lop-sided sound if it's off........hard to tell for sure though, maybe it is centered..............anyone, the song is pleasant, well done

Do you actually mean Border Road? As in the border between one part of town and another, or one country and another?

Or do you really mean Boarder Road? As in a boarder living in a boarding house or in the spare room upstairs? Or is it boarder as in skateboarder or snowboarder? If so, it's a strange name for a road, but maybe I'm missing something obvious...

Thanks guys...good input.....
AlUPChuck (the "UP" is silent)........

Boarder is the correct spelling.......it is a name of the road.......ya know?
I suppose if you wanted to..............you could apply a connection to the male character in the tune as if he was down on his luck....left his wife and was living in a Boarding/flop house on "Boarder" road......

Yup...I guess you could associate it that way......but, this is the wrong Forum for that....good observation however on your part concerning songwriting.......

Gonna re-record over the weekend with drums and hopefully with an on-time bass track.....

I will re-post when done guys...
Thanks again everyone...
Joe

Joro,

Thanks for the feedback. Don't mean to be a noodge, but I think correct spelling is important -- incorrect spelling can just look stoopid, or it can completely change the meaning of what you mean.

I was truly curious because "Boarder Road" seemed like an odd name for a road, and an even odder description of one, unless it was a misspelling.
