O.T: Why do squash courts have so much echo?

Is it because of the relation on the dimensions?
The dimensions are:
Length: 9.75 meters.
Width: 6.4 meters.
Height: 5.64 meters, minimum.
Could it be because of the rear glass wall?

Maybe it's the elevated wood floor, sometimes with an air cushion in the middle?

Room dimensions will cause various frequencies to build up but I'm sure the reason is the hard (very reflective) surfaces.

ok, what do you mean by "hard reflective" surfaces? Do you know how the squash court walls differ from standard walls? I read that sometimes the paint is different (so the ball doesn't "suck" the paint when it hits), but is there any other difference?

don't forget that the walls are normally perfectly parrallel (last time i looked in one... *long time*)

Also, because of such hard reflective surfaces.

thanks for the answers so far. I am asking cause I don't see how they differ from a standard room in terms of how hard and reflective the walls are, or how paralel the walls are. Yet when you scream you'll find that the echo is sustained for a much longer period of time that when you scream inside a common room.

Could it be that the walls are of different materials than standard?

The height is normally VERY different from a standard room,


Also, there's no carpet on the floor to absorb some of the sound.

yes, me thinking in 2D again. You're right that the height is way more than the usual room. Could that be the cause of the echoes?

About the carpet, I don't think it makes a different by itself. I don't have carpet in my room and don't have echo.

I also noticed that courts with glass in the back have way more echo that the ones with material.
