yeah, I was pretty impressed myself...

Question is, could you use such a design in a semi-pro kinda studio and get away with it?

Also, John, do you know where I can get the specs for a THX 'room'.

I heard somewhere that THX also requires a room to have a certain response as well as the speakers.

Does anyone know anything about this?

cheers

d

"do you know where I can get the specs for a THX 'room'. " You got me curious - couldn't find much and don't have the time right now to read clear through Tomlinson Holman's book "up and running with 5.1 surround. BTW, in "THX", the "TH" stands for Tomlinson Holman... Try this link for a teaser, I'll try to find more when I can... Steve

Just hopping back to the THX thing,

knightfly, cheers for the link. They don't seem to mention anything about the exact reverb time, about NC-25 sounds a bit drastic, can anyone here tell me how much that is?

Apparently the room spec etc for multichannel THX stuff is linked with THX PM3 - I will write more as i find it... it's not the easier stuff to find...

Cheers n beers,

Rochey

i thiink it could be pretty intersting...

BTW - Meshugga - sorry for hijacking your thread... I'm still V. Interesting in knowing if Johns 'bedroom' design could be used elsewhere.

Cheers

Rochey, NC-25 is PDQ (Pretty Damn Quiet) - the whole point of THX certification is so schlockers can't pollute the experience. If you follow links to equipment, note the brands/models that are certified. See any Radio Shack PA systems listed? Me too...

I don't have access to about half my acoustics library at the moment, so can't give an exact spec for NC-25, but picture this - go to a mausoleum around midnight, preferably one in a remote part of tibet - put on earplugs, stop breathing, slow your heartrate to 3 BPM... OK, just kidding about the heartrate, and actually NC-15 is doable with the techniques John uses ASSUMING you are a really ANAL guy (NO SHORTCUTS) with a lot of time on his hands and a good budget... Steve

Another wierd thing as well...

I saw a 5.1 speakers set for a PC that was THX certified. Can you believe it? it was about £220 for the lot!

http://web6.scan.co.uk/Products/Info.asp?WPID=15054

I find it hard to believe that speakers at that price would be dolby and THX certified...
But it seems they are....

I think these would be an interesting option to begin mastering in 5.1 - although it wouldn't replace a room of HR624's in a hurry (lololololol)

Any thoughts on these guys?

I know this isn't the right forum, but the conversation seems to be going this way.

cheers

Rochey

How good is THX really? I think one of the specifications states that the room should be square. I never go to the movies so I haven't looked into this but that alone sounds wierd.

I've gotta say it looks like someone trying to get the kind of income Ray Dolby gets for approving Dolby sound tracks. (when you mix in Dolby surround you must have dolby rep to OK the system)

cheers

I allways thought that THX was named after George Lucas' first movie.

I actually have a theatre in my tracking room with the LCD progecter and a 8'x5' screen. ribbon speakers and a dolby digital reciver with an 18" sub compleate with bass shakers on the chairs. and a DVD collection bigger than my local Blockbuster.
