Thanks Spin. I never really thought about how DJing could help in producing as far as seeing frist hand what the people respond to. Definitely an ace-in-the-hole .Made me think, lots of big producers were in fact DJs first.

Man, you've been putting in work from way more than a minute now, and watching your dreams come true! How does that feel???

P.S.

Did you get to meet Heather?

1. It just seems as if producing is the next evolutional step for a DJ to make.

2. It feels GREAT. Trust me it was not a coincidence, I have been paying my dues (due diligence).

3) I gave DJ Heather her first gig (@ Otis' in the mid to late 90's), in fact she was ONLY spinnin' Hip-Hop back-in-the-day (now, ALL she plays is HOUSE. I've known Heather and her ex J-DUB for a very, very, very long time.

I'll post more later ....... peace.

Nope.

That's why I am going the overseas route.

As a DJ/Producer, you either make your money here in the 'States', or you make your money overseas. I making good money here in Chicago, but i know I can make a sh*tload more overseas.

I don't want to be on the radio. They don't pay enough. It doesn't matter if you're on 107.5 or 92.3. It doesn't matter if you're Pharris Thomas, Steve Maestro, Boolu, Phantom, or Maurice Joshua. You will only make $150.00 per hour.

Plus, the Program Directors and Music Directors won't give me enough flexibility to spin creatively.

Example..........

Elroy Smith, Program director for WGCI 107.5 FM, told me that he doesn't want me to push the envelope on my musical content. I told him that Pharris and Boolu (92.3) are kicking you *sses all over the radio dial.

I then continued to share with him that if he wants to keep his listeners, the he needs a DJ like myself at his station.

Even at one of the conference meetings we had down at the downtown offices on Michigan Ave. Steve 'Miggedy' Maestro was saying that "Well, Spin, some of the music you are playing is too new, .... the scratches you are adding are too complex, .... you are playing different accapellas over different instrumentals, ....you are playing R&B-Hip-Hop-80's-70's-WBMX House-new house, and Underground genre's". I said, what the f*ck do you yhink they are playing over on 92.3? You guys have the EXACT same viewer demographics!

So, for me it's not worth the headache of being on the radio here in Chi' (for $150.00 per hour). I tried to tell DJ Lil'John and DJ Vaughn woods @ 107.5, that Elroy Smith will give them a BIG *SS HEADACHE, when it comes to the music that they can and can't play. Until, WGCI changes Program Directors or Elroy Smith changes his views on music content, I will not be spinning for GCI and they will keep losing to 92.3.

And most of the venues or promoters, here in Chicago, aren't paying enough money for me to play their events.

Why should I spin for $150.00 to $750.00 per night, when I can get $500.00 per every 15 minutes, when playing abroad.

There are a few DJ's here in Chicago making more money than me.

Jesse De La Pena

Mark Grant

33/3

Derrick Carter

Felix Da House Cat

Paul Johnson

Sneak

But, 5 of those 7 are straight-up HOUSE DJ's and they make most of their money overseas.

Jesse and 33 spin all formats and they are making LOOT (I can't front on that).

So, for the moment I can work with the low 4 figures a week I make here in Chicago. My goal is to pull in about $40,000 per month. and I am on the correct road to acheive that amount.

I post more later..........................

Knowing that a lot of present dj's started as the house music genre was being formed in the 80s(was born in Chicago BTW ).I ding that a lot of them relocate or frequently visit overseas to spots like London. Its funny how this city just let loose a beautiful artform.HOUSE.....I read a interview about DJ "Pierre".He stated that he only made 500$ on that single "Fantasy Girl, but when relocated to London. He was making like 4-7,000$ for a single...It need to go back to the old wkkc days.....When music meant sumthin to the city.
Ahhhhhhhhhhh,Next time make sure you kiss me before pinching my nerves like this, you mentioned Derrick Carter and one of my idols "Paul Johnson".(Wheelchair bound). That guy gave me my start @ Dance-Mania......All of them guys fing success overseas.Every major DJ frequently travel abroad.Even Gant-Man goes over their time 2 time.....Elroy Smith is like a dictator.A grown as nerd that try to control a city by limiting viewers to what he think they should here. His here to the street is deaf.WGCI been killed the movement.92.3 is imminently gonna knock a patch outta they asses though...

Hey Spin......Lemme ask you...Do you spin house?....If so,what type....Do you fukk with the ghetto-house type or do you club it with the Paul Johnson type.........

OOOOOHHH LONDON!!!

ON MY WAY OVER!!!

I can't WAIT! I've given up hope with mainstream American Radio and Labels. I'm putting all my hopes in the overseas market. They are far more accepting of genre-less artists...they are more creation friendly....you can stay small, but make OK $$$ ( i don't want/need to be a millionaire...i just want to make music...24-7)
I'm telling you March 2003 can't get here FAST enough...FAST ENOUGH!!!

UK I'm on my way...even fired up my irish passport...i can cross as a EU citizen AND get all the perks and BENNIES!!! YEAH BABY YEAH!!! Right-O!!! BigUps and all the other craziness that flies from their mouths...maybe i'll pick up a cute lil' accent too and it's ALL over.

BIG THANKS to SPIN for opening my eyes WIDER to the realm of European labels and music...it's quite inspiring and has been one of the few things left to keep me writing. The review got me geeked...and CARNIVAL!!! OMG CARNNNIIVVALLLL!!! I'm SO THERE!!!
YEAH!
OK...going now.

Hey brutha,

This was a great write up

I especially liked some of your answers but my favorites by far were

don‘t get me wrong, being a DJ in Chicago, you MUST be able to spin ALL formats of music from RnB to “Old School” House, from Reggae to “Filtered House”, from 70’s Rock to “Hard” House, and from 60’s, 70’s, 80’s Soul to “Booty” Music (Ghetto Tech). Let alone all of the commercial stuff you hear on the radio here in the States.

The industry is starting to slip again, that is why we have arrived. Hopefully, through our musical contact, we can help to stimulate some minds for the cause of HOUSE.

good answers

uuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhh mshea....... I already PM'd MR. Spin like 4 days ago to setup the trip..... If we need to fight about it we can

I'm Goin I'm Goin I'm Goin I'm GOIN

You Can't Go You can't go

YOU KNOW WHY YOU CAN'T GO?

THAT's RIGHT

CUZ.....................I'M..........................GOIN

hehehehhehe................. still love ya though mshea....though your tighter so he'll probably take you.....sniff sniff

Talking

Spin, I never knew you DJ'ed. Well I worked for GCI for like a year doing bumpers for the Davonte Stone show and Mike Luv and The Diz. You can still hear some of my work everyday. I know Phantom on a personal level, and he had it rough at GCI. He had ideas just like you, but you have to understand that WGCI is a Clear Channel station, and Clear Channel is just a bulley in the radio world, owning thousands of radio stations world wide. Power 92 is a new station, and since its urban; it has to play other types of music to stay marketable as a respected radio station with a nice number of listeners. If you look at a while back, 92.3 started out playing commercial free for like 2 weeks; then they switched up and started to be just like GCI when it comes to commercials. Most of the radio personalities at Power 92 are ex GCI employees who either got fired or fed up. My point of all this is to compromise to get what you want, I feel that Pharris has came a lot way due to compromising, and now he is known on a national level. He started the same way Phantom and Vaughn Woods did; watch them come up. I've been producing for radio stations worldwide for over 3 years, and Ive seen DJ's sky rocket, and get to levels that you are about to achieve. I tried to email you before to let you know what was going on, but I guess you have everything together; Im proud to see Chitown come up. Just understand that if you're trying to get paid tripple the amounts of the DJ's here, you might deal with worst P.D.'s than Elroy.

P.S. - Elroy is a bitch isn't he. Ole smurf looking ass... ugghh!! LOL

1. All of the "older" DJ's played nuthin' but' House music.
Example...

Pharris
Boolu
Steve Maestro
Phantom
Julian Perez
Twilite Tone
Tone B Nimble
Bad Boy Bill
Spin

Hell, there wasn't any truly dance-able Hip-Hop in 81'/82', when we started (remember we are talking about Chicago, not New York).

2. I explained the reasons why they do that earlier in this thread. You make a TON of more money, abroad. Also, the party-goers overseas appreciate good sounding music. Here in the states if it's not on radio or if it doesn't have a video, the mainstream audience will not embrace it. BTW, that is the House/Dance music's biggest enemy....... RADIO.

3. As did, New York. But as I have stated in previous interviews, there isn't any new life in House music......

4. You can make a SH*TLOAD more than that, now.

5. I feel ya'!!! I used to spin on WHPK Friday nights (I still do sometimes on the last Friday of the month with our member breakinwax). And I used to do WNUR with 3rd Rail.

6. Paul Johnson is a good friend of mine. He might do this remix of a song that I'm doing with Benjamin Diamond (the singer on 'Stardust.......... The Music Sounds Better With You').

Yeah, Paul hooks Gant-Man up with a lot of gigs overseas. He even got him a residency here in Chicago at GLOW.

7. I agree with you. Elroy needs to come-on-out-of-the-closet.

8. Once again, I spin ALL formats. Lately (past two years), I have been spinning longer sets of House music (with everything else sprinkled-in).

I can't limit myself by saying that I spin music like Paul Johnson. But to help you get a better understanding of one of the music genre's I play, I will say that.....I spin more of the Paul Johnson type House, however I do sprinkle some of the slower "Booty-Tracks/Ghetto-tronica" (the beats are like 150bpms, which is TOO fast for my sets. Plus, I spin at clubs that might not understand the music [read: Le Passage, Wave, Butterfield 8, Spy Bar, or even Betty's Blue star Lounge).

Peace.....

My fault g-e-c. It's been a looooooooong weekend for me.

I've DJ'ed every night since Tuesday. I have also been tweaking the H*LL out of these HOUSE tracks. Plus, I haven't been to sleep yet (and it's already 11:00 am).

I'll call you when I get up in a couple of hours (I have to get these songs finished and FedEx'ed to France by Friday).
