i have a 18 x 24 space un attached.i want ur design ideas.if i choose ur design ill send u 2 cases of ur fave beer or one bottle of the good stuff.(crown,chivas)ill pay shipping too.
on the 18 side of the space i have a breaker box and an a/c(window unit)which will be weak point as far as isolation,and sound isolation is a must!i would like to have my controll booth/mixing room on this(18)side of the space.why?because the other side of the room has to do double duty:band rehearsle and recording/ isolation room.i would also like a very small bathroom somewhere in this space(5x4)
my only real concerns are these;the a/c must be in the controll booth facing a door into the larger(rehearsle )room so i can cool that room off for practice ,then close the door for sound isolation,and the space must be extremely sound proof
i dont really need info on sound proofing,i have that covered,what ido need is a lay out that will maximze on the "room with in a room "scheme.

The really unique thing about my design, I think, is that the closet and foyer double as bass traps via "resistive flow" doors – a little idea I adapted from speaker designs.

The depth of the control room is about 13ft. You're right, it's not ideal. But I don’t think it's TOO short, especially if the area directly behind the listening position is covered with QDR diffusors (which are not terribly difficult to build). With respect to low frequency performance, the effective volume of the control room will likely be even larger than your design.

Another advantage is that the bathroom is better isolated from the recording room. Clarence won’t need to stop recording just so someone can hit the can.

I think my design deserves serious consideration.

what are QDR diffusors?

Quadratic Residue Diffusors. These are acoustic diffusors, based on sound (pun ) scientific principles, that actually work. RPG Diffusor Systems http://www.rpginc.com/products/qrd734/index.htm sells these at quite a hefty price, but you can build them yourself for a lot less. I can send you designs… for a small charge.

any links?
i have three doors(and access to more if i want)that have a two hour fire rating and are pretty heavy duty.the way they ar built is as follows:quarter inch wood veneer for each side and the center is filled with lite weight concret.could i make these work?i also must have near total isolation, so any tips in that regard would be helpful.(anything i can do to enhance the room inside a room method)
how much for $$ for the plans you mentioned?
i know this project will not be cheap,so any cost cutting advice would also be appreciated

No, you won’t find any reference to these because they are my own "invention" – or maybe more correctly my own adaptation to architectural acoustics. My design is essentially a way to supercharge the basic mechanisms at work in more traditional bass absorption systems, while also allowing much the absorption system to double as usable space.

In my design concrete filled doors would work for everything but the resistive flow doors. These would need to be specially modified. Wood doors would make this much easier.

I’ve just decided to start offering my services for studio design. In fact, your thread helped prompt my decision. So, I still need to work out a fee schedule. But taking into account my strong qualifications (Physicist/Engineer/Loudspeaker Designer) balanced with my limited studio design portfolio (one semi-major classical recording credit) I think $45 an hour would be fair to start. Designing and drawing up custom diffusors plus a room specific optimal placement diagram should take about an hour once I get an efficient working routine down. It will probably take me twice that long initially, but I won’t charge my first customers for my "startup costs". Yes, $45 sounds about right for your application.

I like the closet/foyer bass trap idea. Now I know I'm on the right track with my room.

Cool, but all they are offering are generic blueprints. I can custom design optimal sizes, frequency ranges and locations to fit specific studio applications. I guess it's like the difference between blindly reaching for a suit off the rack and having one tailored.
