posting unpublished mp3's

We have made some progress with the band, home studio, etc. and have some material recorded on 4-track. I have been experimenting with "cool edit" (thanks drstawl for the recommendation) and have a few mp3's, the sound quality improves with each session. A couple of questions:
1)new uncopyrighted material: is there any way to protect these songs? none of us have a clue about copyrights or producing
2)we play some cover music, will we get in trouble for making mp3's or wav's of other band's material? our sets use some remix cover stuff--

Its safe to say that if you do hip hop cover from little mermaid, Disney will take your first born.
