Angry recording from cassette

I'm new to using Cakewalk and I'm using an older version - ProAudio7. What I'm attempting to do is to use a cassette deck as the source (at this point).

I THINK I have everything connected properly because I am getting a signal in Cakewalk and it looks like it's recording but my big problem is that I can't seem to control the input levels. It is peaked to the MAX and I can't get it to come down. Yes, I've attempted to adjust the volume on the Windows mixer, tried to follow every step and recommendation in the user manual.

Also, when I try to PLAYBACK I get no sound.....

HELP!! Anybody got any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong????

How are you getting the sound to your sound card? What is your settings for playback set at?

It's been a long time for PA7 for me but, did you run the wav profiler? Then there should be a place to set you output options to where ever you want them to go. Then you should be able to hear what you recorded.
P.S. What sound card are you using?

I'm using a SoundBlaster PCI128 - not a real highend card....

wave profiler

I just ran the wave profiler and it looks like it set all of the default parameters.... My major problem tho is the fact that I can't seem to control the input levels. I did get it to record and I heard the playback, which is a distorted mess because I can't adjust the levels for some reason....

Cool A couple of things to try...

Hi Ace,

There should be a software mixer with your SoundBlaster audio card that enables you to adjust the line-in level. If it's currently set to maximum, that could be the reason you are getting distortion.

I can't be more specific than that because I don't own an SB card. Try looking in the Creative directory to locate a mixing device for the SB PCI128

On the other hand, your line-out signal from the cassette deck may be overloading the line-in on the SB card. Have you tried feeding the cassette line-out through a mixer before it goes in to the SB?

Cool distortion

Thanks Bluesmeister,

I got that part figured out. This was my first foray into this and I just wasn't going far enough into the mixer to set the correct levels.... After a little digging around in the HELP files I got it figured out....
