jazz kit bass drum
I have to mic a jazz drumer kit (playing in the same room with all other musicians), I tend to mic the kit only with oh mics (and some tunes also snr when played with brushes).
but for one tune there is an obvious bass drum part so I want to print a bd track as well. this bd is very special, it is very small and very long and close from both sides (cann't put mic inside the drum) it has a clear pitch which is quit high, a normall bd mic (like d12) might not work here. which mic should I use? tell me about any model but here are the mics left (after miking all other instruments) for me: m88,sm57, md421, c414buls, beyer m500 (ribbon), beyer m201, km84i. thanx guy |

I don't belive that NOONE has no opinion/expirience to help with this topic...
maybe I should stick to treads like: "what is the best mic that makes you look cool" that gets so many replys here ... guy |

A large diaphram condensor out in front of the kick about 2 feet out would capture the kick nicely. The 414 might be a good choice there.

![]() I want to back up Track Rat, and his large Diaphragm... Good Idea and I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest an Audio Technica 4033 to be exact.... You say the pitch is relatively high, so I think that one of them would work great... Nice and close to the front skin, but not too close... probably 1-2 feet like Rat suggested. In my opinion. Joe

You'll get a lot of bleed from the other instruments in the room if you mic the drum as suggested above. You might consider making a short tunnel, using a packing blanket and another mic stand, to cut down on the bleed from the other instruments playing in the same room.

Good idea Harvey.... Won't that affect the sound though?...
(just wondering for my own curiosity) Joe

Bleed could definately be a problem but seeing that it's a jazz group, I'm making a bold assumption that they won't be playing at the levels a thrash metel band would be playing at. Depending on the room and the material, the bleed may even work for you.

I don't think you'd want to put that ribbon mic out in front of a kick drum.
Not to sound elitest or anything, but I'd suspect a jazz trio (or group) to be a little more refined than your average punk-heavy metal-thrash band. Capturing them together, with a little bleed might be a good thing. I don't know if you can get a hold of one, but an SM7 can work very well on kick. It's a dynamic, and has a relitively high SPL. I'd reach for that before putting one of my delicate LD condensors in front of the kick. Just some thoughts.

I always have a large diaphram condensor out in front of a kick, even if I have something inside of it as well. In particular, a Groove Tubes AM-52 in cardiod. No problems there even with death metel bands.

Yes I have. The only problem is if your kick pedel is noisey, you'll pick it up too.

How about a large diaphragm cardioid inside the kick, facing perpendicular to the beater?

thanx Brent Casey but that was the problam from the first place, this bd has skins from both sides and there is no way to put mic in.
