Help - Cakewalk doesn't hear soundcard's 'line in'!

So, I just started playing around with Home Studio 2002 using a guitar straight into the mic input of my sound card (Hercules Fortissimo II), and everything was going so well that I decided to get a digital amp modeler (Johnson J-Station) and placed it between the guitar and sound card. Too much noise (due to phantom power on mic input?), so I switched to the line in, but HS2002 doesn't see a signal now - even though I can hear it and the meters on the sound card's control panel jump around. I've double checked that everything is plugged in correctly, 'line in' is selected in the sound card control panel, and exhausted the three choices (Left, Right, Stereo) under the In drop-down menu on the track controls.

Any idea why HS doesn't see the line-in?

Just a thought. Are you sure you selected Line In in the recording section of the control panel, and not in the playback section. It's an easy mistake to make.

It's highly doubtful that your sound card has phantom power. The noise is most likely the result of the crappy pre-amps on the sound card.

Yeah, there's only one drop-down menu labeled 'Record Source.'

Haha, I gotta stop using technical terms before I really know what they mean. What's the difference between phantom power and pre-amp power?

It turns out that I should have rebooted the computer after switching inputs - that's what I get for working on computer problems at four in the morning.
