Q's about loops, midi, soundfonts and drum maps..

Ok, I have been tampering with the included Smartloops in Sonar 2 (www.smartloops.com also known as drag and drop drummer) and I must say, its a pretty cool concept and I am about to order the full version. Really good for writing at home... SOMETIMES... my problem is, my music, about 1/3 of the time, doesnt quite fit standard patterns very well. Its kind of choppy and offset with strange timings and stuff...

Blatant honesty alert: I know very little about midi, and next to nothing about the implementaion of soundfonts, and totally nothing about drum maps...

Now, here is what I am wondering:
1) Is there a way to build custom beats and fills in places where I cant get a loop to work? I'm thinking midi, and soundfonts, but I'm not sure they work together. This is new ground for me. Be patient and thorough please.
2) Can the loops be broken down into seperate tracks for more precise mixing?
3) Is the new drum map function a better way to accomplish all this instead of loops, or maybe use them together? Will it trigger soundfonts? If it does, how do I incorporate this stuff into a section of my project? Should I learn to use the drum map or am I wasting my time?
4) midi and soundfonts- do they work together, midi triggering the sound? I think they do, dont know how to do it though. At all.
I think I have my initial questions asked, and there will be more.
If there are any tutorials online anywhere, please link me to them.

Thanks!
