I'm asking this here 'cause it's a multi-brand question

Anyone that has had experience with a few different digital recorders care to comment on their pick (not of your nose) of the entry level ($800 - $1500 MF(or whoever) discount price) Roland vs Akai vs Korg vs Fostex gear?

Stuff like:
overall bang for the buck
"I'm getting started but I want effects"
"I thought digital meant stuff was quicker!"
"I thought didgital meant stuff was easier"
"Why do they say hard disk if I can only store 30 minutes without an external drive"
You get the vibe!
I've read a lot of posts, but in the brand forums it's mostly brand-loyal vs. brand-bashing "I'm in love with my gear" kind of stuff
(except for Roland manuals which I am now prejudiced against without having even seen a recent one! Thanks for being a positive influence, folks!)
