what is a good recording level for vocals???

i was wondering what would be the limit of db for vocals, like what would be a nice db level and then after a that it justs sounds like crap?

I try to get the peaks hitting between about -6 and -3 dB. I also have a bit of compression on it to take care of my singing overenthusiastically in places.
